Cyclone MKII RD Touchy In Last Gear

I have a Cyclone MKII long cage with a 48/28/28 triple crank and a 6 speed Hyper glide (14x28). Friction shifting. New chain installed. The reach to the last big gear (28) I have the limit screw maxed out to line up. 75% of the time it will shift to this gear, but some times it will just chatter in it's attempt to climb. One time it actually over-shot the gear and the chain got stuck between the cluster and the hub. I thought that this set-up would be no problem for this derailleur (based on previous posts and advice) but it seems that it might be at it's limit. I also gave the LBS a shot at adjusting it and ended up with the same result. The LBS told me that it should work but it might be tempermental. They suggested I invest in a 9 speed long cage 105.
They checked the Cyclone and said that the springs are strong and the pivots are tight. I know I might get better results with a newer derailleur but I would like to keep the period derailleur to match the Trek 614. Any thoughts from the Suntour experts out there?

Much Appreciated... Bill

Did you check chain length? Could be too short by a link or two.

I put the same RD on my girlfriends Dawes and she also had a problem getting into the lowest gear, I had assumed it was because we built an 8 speed hub and stretched the rear to 128.
I know I had enough chain in my case and same with the springs and pivots. Originally the bike had a cyclone MKII and an ultra 7 freewheel so its possible it just doesnt have the range for for your application.
I would swap out the wheels and see if you have luck getting it to shift to the far left but with a smaller than 28 cog. The RD should have enough capacity but maybe it doesnt like the size of the jump in your first two cogs.

Have you tried putting the wheel in different spots (front/back) in the dropout?

Will try these suggestions!

I have not tried to reposition the rear wheel. Tomorrow I will look into adding a link or two. I did not think this would be a challenge (6 speed cluster) for this derailleur. It's a nice crisp shifting unit!
Any suggestions besides a used 105?

Bill

I have a Suntour V-GT long cage that I like a lot. I believe it's rated 34 max.
