Brooks Professional Saddles Broken in...Some photos please

Lets see your broken in Brooks Professional saddles. I'm intimidated by the firmness of my new one. I got my B17 Narrow with the same problems but it gradually became comfy. I'm hoping this saddle can be the magic one. I've applied Obenhaufs LP goop all over it. I used a blow dryer to bake in multiple coats. I intend to ride it for the rest of this year without further application.

While it's by no means a good photo, my large-rivet Pre-Softened is visible on my '87 Basso at the left below. Broken in quite well:

Not a great pic of the saddle. 700 miles and I can imagine a better saddle. I much prefer the professional to the B17 on my other ride.

Ive got 400 or so miles on my 1987 Pro and I think I still have a ways to go. I can't say it's crazy comfortable yet, but it IS better than a padded san marco saddle that I have.

I use various Selle San Marco Supercorsas, the San Marco Regal, Cinelli Unicanitor, and the Brooks Team Pro. Best long distance saddle, without a doubt, is the Brooks Team Professional. Best saddle for riding hard, and a surprise to me, is now the Cinelli Unicanitor #1, bettering the Supercorsa and the Regal. I love this saddle and it was originally an aesthetic/period purchase.

But for breaking in the Brooks, be patient. Give it some hours and miles with summer coming, it's even better. Your sweat and rump will break it in with 500 miles showing progress for sure. Proofide adds to the equation(in a positive way, but dont overdo it). It's a heavy as hell beast, but the ultimate in long distance cycling comfort once formed to your sit bones. Then again, saddles are such a personal preference.

My Brooks Pro, purchased new in the early 80s. Still firm, but very comfortable.

Just as comfortable new in 2008,

...as the 1984 edition.

In my mind (and on my rump), if they are too soft, they are uncomfortable.

What trade bait do you want for it?

despite my negativity, I can't force myself to give up on it. It's actually a "Professional Select," and I've always liked the way they look.

I think most of what you are seeing is reflection of the flash. It was quite dark when I took the pic. I don't feel any pressure on my pernium area.

I have some observations:

- Brooks Pro's when new are comfortable for me out of the box
- Broken in Pro's are comfortable for me
- B-17's out of the box feel like someone took a sledge hammer to my taint then sanded it clean after the ride
- B-17's that are broken in feel like riding on butter (Mmmm butter), and I prefer the narrow version.

It has both, and curiously enough, I do not feel the ridge. The soft spots are not spongy either. Very comfortable.

Shows how people's anatomy are different. I have a mid-broken-in Professional Select that has always been comfortable, new, used, etc but I find the brand new plain B17 to be heavenly. It's when the B17 is near the end of its life that I can't stand the feel any more.

Cheers,
Karl
