Trek 600 redo (excuse to post pics..)

Going touring in the fall with the family, so I need a touring bike. Looking around the shop my gaze fell on an abandoned Trek 600 frame collecting dust. Without removing the dust I unceremoniously added some low gear components, smaller wheels and other paraphernalia and shot some pics.

..and a less artsy full view:

Well, to make a long story manageable: We saved up $5000, got Sonja granted a year leave of absence, talked Bjorn into home schooling and will attempt to ride from the Pacific Northwest to Big Bend, Texas and points beyond. We should be on the road for 5-6 months.

Great looking build. Not sure if I'd call Deore XT lower end, but that's just me.

I meant low ratio. Sorry for the confusion. XT is good stuff, as you point out.

Sr. Eibar!

It's good to hear you're really going through with this trip... I don't know if you have internet, or where exactly your route takes you, but the pacific coast trail passes within 6 miles of my house, PM me and maybe we can meet up and I can take y'all out to lunch...

Wow. Sounds like a great trip. Good luck and a safe journey. Take lots of pictures.

As for your Trek, it looks great and should be a faithful traveling companion. Now restore it to original.

Jan: Would you mind telling us a little bit about the tires? I'm curious as to their width -- I've got a 1985 Trek 600, and my LBS told me that 700x28c was the max for this frame -- true, or LBS?

JB, the LBS is correct. But I build up some wheels in the smaller 650A size (AKA 1 3/8", ISO 590). You can see my post about that here. That way 38mm Schwalbe Marathon's can go on the bike. But you need longer reaching brakes, hence the Mafac's.

I missed that thread entirely, thanks for pointing it out...very interesting concept, 650A, and I may have to give it a try now. Best of luck and Bon Voyage
