Gazelle pre AA, AB, BB, ...?

Hi there!
Rumour has it that once upon a time the Gazelle frames did not come in the ever confusing AA, AB, and BB variation.
I have a 'Gazelle Champion' (no mention of Mondial). Full SR, derailleur says 74 and could very well be the original. Is made of 531, has the butterfly brake stay and roto BB (with the small butterfly behind the BB).
Was it then back in the mid 70s that there where no other variations (Mondial, AA, AB, BB,...)
Cheers,

So stupid ... just found the remains of the AA-Frame sticker

Anyways, it appears to be a clone of faustobeer's Gazelle for sale (see in the sales section and on ebay). Colour, size, decor, but mine says just Champion where the other says Champion Mondial. The only other difference is that my top tube cable guides are baze on.

Anyone knows something about the difference between Champion and Champion Mondial?
And can they be dated by a serial code or something?

Cheers,
Guido

Guidogad,

I believe was 'Champion' was for the German market, as 'Champion Mondial' was already claimed/used by another company.

Jan has made a site on the old Gazelles. Visit the 'Gazelle Pages'. You can compare your serial with some other bikes overthere.

Mine is an 81 AA frame with the same features you describe (roto BB, butterfly brake and chain stay bridge).

All sorted out. The 'Gazelle Pages' are amazing. I have a German AA-frame from '78.

My Gazelle family has just grown by a new member. It's confusing me again, so, here are some stupid questions:

The new baby is labelled an A frame BUT it's Reynolds 531 and weighs in at 1,883g, almost 200g lighter than my AA frame ?!?! It's a bit smaller but , wow, that's light! The fork is 683g and again 50g lighter than the one in the AA frame. It has long campa drops and 120mm spacing, everything is clamp on, serial number would indicate 73/74. However, all 600 arabesque components are 79/80, the Reynolds decal is 78-81. The 'Champion Mondial' font is script.
Any ideas how all this can fit together? The frame looks very much early 70s with components and decals late 70s. And then, the frame is so light - what's the difference to the AA frame then??? (except for the mudgard eyelets)

Cheers,
Guido
