1st Generation Dura Ace
These seem to come in two versions, regular polished aluminum and black. I have a full group in black. Black hubs, brakes, chainwheels, etc. It does not seem like standard anodizing or paint. I do not see it in the early (date codes are 1974) catalogs.

Here's the silver (no paint) version.
I picked this up on a Raleigh beater. If you want me to check any dimensions or anything else, let me know. The cranks are now off the bike.

I always assumed it WAS anodized (it's aluminum alloy after all), but now that has my curiosity piqued, I'll have to take a close look at one of the few early black DA things I own. Most black anodizing seems to bleach out to purplish gray over time, but this stuff remains black, just gets a little "chalky". So if it's paint it has to be something formulated to bond with AL alloy (most paints don't)...maybe epoxy-based(?).

Once in a while, I'll try to remove black anodizing from parts with oven cleaner and it doesn't work. Then I switch to paint stripper. I just ran into that with some Tektro inverse levers that I want to make look a little less modern.
