Hey, isn't that against the law, you know, don't "fold, spindle, or mutilate"? It is cool though.

Legality could be an issue. More important for C&V purposes, wouldn't the coin have to be period correct? Dan, I think I have an early 70's 5p that would do you well, but for your bikes, Neal, I think we'll need something with a portrait of King George VI on it....

yes. the Treasury Dept. *could* nail you for that, but doubt that they would, they have other things to worry about. First they'd want to make an example of every one of those "souvenir" machines that smash and stamp pennies...and on a bike-related tangent: the Sycip Bros. (Santa Rosa, CA ?) used to be famous for brazing pennies into the stay caps and fork crowns of their custom steel frames. Never got popped for it, AFAIK. only problem I can see with your friend's hanger is everybody's going to ask the same question: "Hey, how much did that hanger cost you?"

Actrually it's only illegal if you deface money then put it back into circulation.
Came about when coins were made using valuable metals (gold and silver) people would shave the edges of coins, then sell it. If you scraped a bit off enough gold coins, you'd have another coins worth of gold.
It's why coins have scripting, or ridges on the sides, so you could tell if they'de been scraped.

With todays unbacked currency the metals are simply not worth scraping, so the edge markings are mere tradition. unbacked means no real value, people have simply agreed that this much paper is worth an hours work.
