to strip or not to strip

This lugged 80's Raleigh Sportif 410 was deposited on my doorstep by a friend who seems to be finding bikes everywhere.

From what I can see everything besides the frame is dumpster fodder.
It is a lot of work getting those parts off a frame, i'd be willing to do it
if there was a chance the frame itself would be of interest to someone for a project bike.
the amount of rust on the frame isn't anywhere NEAR what is on the rest of the bike
so IMHO it should clean up nicely.

Any thoughts?

A really low end bike for sure. I would strip it down, sell some of the decent parts, derailleurs might clean up, brake calipers, shift levers. Then I would give the frame an oxalic bath (I keep a kiddie pool full, so that would cost me nothing). Some hipster/fixed gear rider might like that frame.

I too am building up a parts inventory as a result of stripping bikes that are simply not worth the effort to restore. Fortunately, many of these donor bike parts will live on as part of future projects.

Before you give up, take a look at what appears to be severe brown 'rust' on alloy parts like those DiaCompe brake hoods and levers. Sure the bike is really that rusty, and not just coated in crud?

aren't those Suntour Stem shifters from the early 80's?

...on a bike with cottered cranks?

That seems bizarre to me just because the bike seems so un-cared for. I think the frame is cool lookin though, I really like the decals.

I agree: the frame at least is worth salvage (and would make an *appropriate* single-speed or fixie for somebody) and some of those parts don't seem capable of having rust, so I bet there's a certain amount of rust-colored dirt on this. Plenty of real rust, too! I mix the oxalic acid by "feel" so don't have any measurements to share: if it's not working, add more crystals and stir.
