    Help me get the right crank.

    I have a '72 Schwinn Super Sport that I recently rescued from a basement where it has sat unused and certainly unloved for the last several decades. I decided that I was going to convert it to a single speed and try to eliminate some of the weight. I know that some of you will find this to be sacriledge but its the path I've chosen. What I need is a crank that looks right with that bike. I'm hoping y'all will have the answer. So what crank fits the bill. I also want to be able to use more modern pedals, clipless on one side and platform on the other.

    Most folks who want 9/16" pedals and lighter cranks get the bottom bracket adaptor kit and then have the option of using almost any old school ISO aluminum crankset. The Nervar Star, the TA Professional, and the Stronglight 93 look sharp and are period correct for your bike, go down to 38T, and are French, as are your hubs and several other components.

    The lack of cutout on your Campy cranks goes very well with your smooth, un-lugged Schwinn. (Which it never gets old to see.)

    Pastor Bob, any issues with that 30 tooth chainwheel and the Campy FD? I tried essentially the same thing with the Paramount using the more modern crank set and the chain dragged on the FD.
