Miyata 1000 max tire width
Anyone have a clue as to the max width a Miyata 1000 touring bike can handle. I have had 35's on it, currently running 32s. In the next week I will be touring on gravel roads(very steep) as well as blacktop. I would rather not use a Mnt. bike but want a little more traction. I think 38-40s would be a big enough tire. I'm looking at Michelin Transworld sprint in 40 or 35. Thoughts on size? I posted on touring forum but barely go any looks and 1 reply. Thanks Charlie

I've had a 1000 back in the 80's and I have no idea how you can fit a 32 and even run a fender?
But then I rode it over all sorts of gravel roads with the factory size tires.

i can fit 32 under a fender...possibly 35.
the problem you are going to have if you go any larger is your front derailleur is probably going to rub your tire when you are are on the big ring. i think this is where you will have clearance issues as opposed to rubbing the seat stay bridge.
i have an 82 miyata that im running 700c, so i may have a bit more room than you.

I've run 35s with fenders, little thread. I've also ridden many many dirt roads with the tires. On this tour I plan to climb some serious dirt roads in West Virginia. The grades will exceed 10% and go for 4-5 miles. I want as much traction as I can get without going to a mountain bike.
