Need help w/ bar-end shifters.

Hello all,

I am in the process of upgrading some near-death parts on my 1981 Trek 610. A part of this project involves converting from downtube shifters to bar-end shifters. As you might know, my particular Trek has clamp-on downtube shifters, which creates a certain problem when changing to a bar-end system: cable stops. I do not have, nor plan to add, braze-on cable stop/ shifter mounts to my downtube.

My initial plan was to purchase a Shimano CAH-51 Clamp-On Double Housing Stop from the Harris Cyclery web site. (Link ) Unfortunately, this item is no longer in stock and has no ETA. Harris is the only source I know of for this item, and it's obviously a crucial part for this project.

I have read a few threads in this part of the forum on similar topics, and it was discussed how one might rig up a solution from the parts of the existing clamp-on downtube shifters (the clamp, namely) and attach standard braze-on cable stops to this contraption. Do any of you have experience in this area? The DT shifters and grouppo on my bike are Suntour Cyclone II.

Thanks for any help you can give, it's much appreciated!

I have a bag full of Shimano or SunTour clamp-on downtube cable stops. You can have one for the cost of mailing. Drop me a PM.

Clamp-on cable stops...

I have several, both Suntour and Shimano. What Barcons are you using? Suntours are excellent.

I have Huret stops on a couple of bikes, too. I think the Campy ones are prettiest, but they all do the same job.

I will be using 8 speed Shimano shifters. I'm not sure the specific model, but I can look them up.

You can roll your own with what you have:

Drill a little hole and half of a bigger one and you're good to go.
