Peugeot UO-8 Single Speed help

Not sure if this is in the right section or should be moved to the Fixed gear forum.

I have an early 70s UO-8 that I recently busted the rear derailer. I figure since this is a commuter bike it may be a good time to switch to a single speed or even a flip flop hub. I have started doing some general research but am not sure of what I need to make this happen. I am pretty new to working on a bike but definately will to be patient and learn. What needs to be replaced and what needs to be bought?

it'd probably be cheaper to just get another derailleur

+1 Any vintage Suntour RD would be quite an upgrade, and not cost more than about $15.

I am open to a new derailer. Can anyone point me in the direction to purchase?

Where to find a low cost vintage derailleur:

1. ebay.

2. Visit a couple of local bike shops, some will have take off parts in bins.

3. Put a wanted to buy in your local Craigs List.

4. Contact some flippers in your area, they probably have a pile of them. Flippers are pretty easy to spot, look for better Craigs List ads, with the same background (often a garage door), and they use terms like: "recently serviced" and "ready to ride".

5. Stop at a local bicycle co-op if you have one in your area.

I've got a couple that would work. I'll snap some pics if you'd like.

There's another solution which was widely used over here when derailleurs snapped: remove any remains of the derailleur, choose a straight line from front chainring to sprocket, shorten chain to adequate length, hey presto, a single speed. Won't stop you from keeping those extra links and fitting a deraileur back at some later date.
