Check out the top tube! Wild! Unique. Or maybe someone will say it looks damaged, whatever, I have never seen this in a bike.

Just had a basic tune-up with all new cables added, everything works well and bike looks nice. Also has newer Specialized tires, bar wrap, and seat. Around a 53cm frame with a 29" stand over height, best for most riders 5' 4" to 5' 8" tall. |
Older Merlin road bike
I'm going to regret letting you vultures know about this one. I want it really badly, but I just don't have the cash to blow on a ti bike this old in case the frame poops out after a few rides. +1 If that were my size, I'd buy it. That's an excellent value. The Merlins are supposed to be fantastic riders. I've heard of a handful of Ti frames pooping out -- mainly through fatigue from A LOT of riding. How could you not ride them a lot, though? They are sooo nice.
I was wondering which bike to take out today...this decided it! |

For what it's worth, I thought (perhaps mistakenly) that Ti was supposed to be bulletproof, or close to.

Can you explain? (E.g., how exactly do they fail, and is the failure gradual or sudden?) I'm constantly tempted by Ti bikes but don't have any experience with one, so this comment piques my interest for sure.
For what it's worth, I thought (perhaps mistakenly) that Ti was supposed to be bulletproof, or close to. Also curious about this (in particular, how it compares to a good steel bike). TIA. First, any frame that is poorly made, or where there's an error, can have issues. Ti is trickier to work with as I understand it because you can't have oxygen pollute the weld. Sometimes you'll hear of that happening with a ti bike, nut it's the exception. If the bike has lasted this long while ridden, it's FINE. There were a few rumors about some Merlins cracking near the bottle bosses, mostly you heard that about the post cambridge Merlins. This merlin is cambridge, at the height of their mastery. Imwouldn't hesistate to ride any merlin any more than Id hesitate with any steel frame. The glue job tI is another matter...like Miyata...and I wouldn't go near it. What's great about Ti is its strength to weight ratio and its immunity to corrosion. No paint needed. No scratched paint anymore. The merlins have beautiful puddle welds. Ride characteristic has to do with tubing diameter more than material...Merlins are often paired with cf forks (likely original aluminum fork), and the combo of a cf fork and that tubing really works for me. Tubing diameter is not as OS as some modern steel, but thicker than your standard 531. I think merlin gets it just right, and you'll find most merlin owners here agree. You can't lump ti bikes together anymore than you can steel...it's the builder. Merlins were designed by tom kellogg and built up by very good builders. I am not going to make blanket statements about all ti...but Merlin is as nice a bike as you're liable to find. |
Price is highly ambitious, but it's a cool bike:

That is a very cool looking bike, but I would have thought that bike should have drillium derailleurs? However even though I have heard of that brand I know nothing about that particular model, the price seems high but it probably is rare since in my 40 plus years of riding I have never seen one, so it might be worth the price. I think I would rather have that then a Colnago for the price, but that's just me, especially if it had drillium Campy derailleurs.

As for failure, there was a fellow a month or two ago on The Paceline who had a Lynskey frame fail from fatigue. Apparently, there was a nick in the weld or thereabouts, and it grew over 10's of thousands of miles. It broke clean one day, and Lynskey wouldn't provide a new frame, arguing that it was beyond it's lifetime. |
@KonAaron Snake, @TimmyT, thanks for the replies -- sounds like cases of failure are fairly isolated in example. Stiff power transfer would be welcome. My Columbus SLX bike, sweet as it rides, gets pretty flexy when really applying the torque! (And I'm hardly breaking any wattage records...)

Picked up the Opus from a few pages back. Thanks to everyone that posts here everyday, wouldn't have had a clue it was available otherwise. No idea if '83 or '84. Serial is F306 but that doesn't seem to correspond to any dating I can find online. Really looking forward to building this up, any recommendations on wheels? |
