Vitus 979 Racing Road Bike Vintage French 50.8CM Frame Triathalon Etc - $1000 (Gloucester, MA/North Shore)
Date: 2009-09-03, 9:56PM EDT
Reply to: sale-cy6qz-1357558341@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]

I have an Excellent shaped Vitus 979 from the 1980's; this bike can still hold it's own. 20 years ago, the total cost of the set-up was well over $2500. Approximate measurements: 20" [50.8 CM]; Dural All Aluminum Frame (Supposedly the lightest frame available at the time); 30" [76.2 CM] Standover; 22" [55.88 CM] Top Tube measured end to end. Cool, purple color with nifty handlebar wraps that will be easy to find amidst the frenzy, during your next triathalon. Has Dura Ace Derailer, Kinesis 6061 Forks, Ambrosio 19 Extra SuperElite Rims, Tioga Model 7000 Handle Bars; Titanium seat mount, Campagnolo, Sachs, Athena Brakes, shifters, etc. Shimano pedals/clips... Quite a rig!

Here is some scarce information on this classic French frame maker:
ttp://schutt.org/velo/vitus-979.php

Frame is beautiful with minor signs of use - much better shape than others I have seen offered. Vitus emblem has a little wear. Serial # is E130580. A very enjoyable ride & quite a set-up. It is truly a fast bike and still very light, even by today's standards. PLEASE include your phone number & which item you are interested in when emailing me, so that I will know you aren't a scammer.

Buy Local - Buy Used! F- the corporations. Let's all do our part to help send the likes of Goldman Sachs back to hell!

Please keep in mind that I am located 30 miles north of Boston, before taking the time to email.

Thanks for looking; craigslist rules!

That's a sweet looking frame! Tange 1 is good stuff, and it looks like it's all Tange 1. Components are nothing special, but they should function well. Has the seller dropped the price? Ad was posted more than a week ago, so I think you have room to negotiate. I might pay $200 if it was completely overhauled, but seller only mentions new bar tape, so it may need new tires, brake pads, et al. Just because the brakes 'work' doesn't mean they work well. But if the frame fits you, I think it would be worth at least $150. Not as a flipper, but as a rider.

I think $200 or the asking $215 is fair for that bike. Maybe even better than fair. The chromed seat stays are beautiful, its clearly been cared for, and you have to consider the market. Milwaukee is urban and therefore justifies higher prices than rural areas just because of greater demand.

You can have a barn full of nice bikes in the middle of nowhere and there are only certain types of people who will drive out for them. Getting them and bringing them to cities is something some people make a livelihood on. If its already in Milwaukee, or nearby, I think that is a very fair price. It does have a nice crankset, and the frame alone could fetch $150 on ebay. Check out the cast seat cluster. Well made bike.

80's Lotus Classique

My ambition is to clean it up, install a Sugino triple and BB that's been collecting dust along with a nice Suntour Cyclone II and new saddle.
I just hope that it fits me as I'm 6-1" with 34" inseam. I usually ride a 59 or 60cm. Some padded bar tape would be nice too!

Too tall for me, but it looks like a very high end Bianchi.

For Sale or Trade, Older Bianchi (Oak Creek, Wisconsin)

Date: 2009-09-04, 7:54AM CDT
Reply to: sale-8utxf-1357926831@craigslist.org [Errors when replying to ads?]

I have an older model Bianchi road bike. I purchased it used a few years ago, but haven't ridden it much. I'm looking to sell or trade for a decent mountain bike (Nothing I can buy from Wal-Mart, etc.), as I'm starting to get into off-road and mountain bike riding, it's more my style. It looks to be a late 1980's/early 1990's Bianchi, 61 cm, with Shimano 600 components (front and rear derailleurs, crankset, pinkie shifters), Royal Gran Compe calipers, DiaCompe brake levers and pads, Mavic Reflex 622 x 13 wheels, Continental Ultra Gatorskin 700 x 23c tires, hard leather Brooks saddle. As for a mountain bike, I'm 6' 1", so something that will fit me, and I'm pretty rugged on everything I use, so it has to be able to stand up to a little punishment. Not looking for anything outfitted for extreme downhill (such as a Santa Cruz, although that would be nice), just something to take off road for a little fun. Please offer a fair price if interested in buying. Thanks for looking.

Bikemore, I was going to drop them a line on the Trek but I knew you'd be on it already. Too bad it's not your size. By the way, what is your size?

I like when one of our other local C&V members goes away on vacation. It gives me a fighting chance!

Nice of you to think of me Scott. My size is 53-54. Have been known to be happy on a 52 or 55.
But if you knew my storage situation you wouldn't be so concerned about me getting first in line.

Well I won't be around all weekend. Don't know about any other Boston C&B people.

It is closer to your size, isn't it Scott or are you more up around 59?

Olmo w/fully pantagraphed Campy & Columbus tubing - $500 (Boulder, CO)

Olmo Biciclette is one of the oldest Italian framemakers, and easily the peer of Guercotti, Pinarello Masi, and Colnago, and certainly has a more storied tradition. Olmo began producing bicycles in 1939 only six years after Campagnolo gets started in Tullio Campagnolo's Vicenza workshop. Pinarello doesn't come into the picture until 1952, Colnago until 1954, and Guercitotti barely gets going before the likes of Cannondale and Trek come onto the American scene.

Guiseppe Olmo won the Gold Medal at the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles in the Team Time Trial riding for Italy. He won Milan-San Remo twice (breaking the record once in the latter effort), he won fully 20 stages of the Giro, and was the National Champion of Italy in '36, and held the UCI hour record.

Olmo shares many similarities with Falerio Masi (Masi Bicycles), who was also a professional bike racer in the 1930s participating in many of the same races that Guiseppe Olmo was winning however the difference with Olmo, unlike Masi, is that they have never focused on distribution to the United States. Masi recognized the US market to be so critical to their business they actually relocated from Italy to California in the early seventies. Colnago heavily markets and advertises to the American cyclist and depends on their US distribution for their survival.

Olmo has always been somewhat aloof of the American market only barely having a distribution agreement in place to catch the end of the 'bike boom' in the US in the eighties. This taste of the US market was largely at the direction of Guiseppe's younger brother Michelle who saw the likes of Gios, and Colnago refocus their business onto serving the American cyclist. During the eighties Olmo briefly attempted distrubtion to the US through Bicycle Parts Pacific and for a time were the premier and most expensive Italian bike available.

All I know is that it has amazing matching engraved and pantagraphed components. I know very little about Campagnolo components, and even less about vintage Campy, but it looks like this bike has a lot of Nuevo Record and Gran Sport on it. Sadly this frame (58.5c-c and 60c-t) is just too small for me. The beautiful pantagraphed Campagnolo seatpost doesn't have nearly enough extension.

Best offer.

View pics:

https://vintageolmo.shutterfly.com/

I picked up this bike looking for a restoration project. I just don't have the money and have other projects that are undone to boot. Obviously these pantagraphed Campy parts could be parted out on eBay for $600-700 not even counting the Columbus Olmo frame, however I'm looking for someone who wants the WHOLE bike and is interested in restoring the bike back to its proper glory. I'm thinking Cyclart repaint, new decals, the works.

$500 obo

I like the fork. If I were passing through ATL en route to LA (lower Alabama) - which is frequent for me - I'd be very tempted. At first I thought it was burned paint from trying to heat & bend a bent top tube...but it maybe from bird crap in a barn too For the price - and my size too! - it looks worth owning. I like the chrome fork. Refreshing to see the price not being pimped out.

Picked up four bikes for $25 total today. Two are probably total trash except the racks. The other two have great potential.

Schwinn Spitfire 5 - 5 speed with drum brake - should be a fun project. Will probably need to paint the rims and big fat spokes.
Madwagon - newer beach cruiser - fairly light and only needs cleaning, lube, and seat.
Sears Ted Williams Free Spirit 3 speed - trash
KMart All Pro 3 speed (identical manufacturer to Sears bike) - trash

Going to look at this bike tomorrow... Any comments?... What would you pay?
Great looking frame. Another poster here, wrk101, has the same bike:
