'85 Trek 520 61cm Reynolds 501 $300
https://newyork.craigslist.org/que/bik/4307960119.html
I just mounted brand new Panaracer Pasela TG tires on it. It has Shimano 600 cranks, brakes, levers, derailleurs and shifters. It is a 15 speed with the low gear that is good for climbing with a load on the rack.
Comes with small Nashbar panniers and without pedals and without the brooks saddle shown in the photo.

I was just about to post a link to the Pro Miyata, but you beat me to it, gingi310. For those outside of SF, the Tenderloin is one of the seediest parts of town, perhaps one of the seediest in the country. Maybe just a legit flipper, but those two bikes certainly don't fit the same person. I hope those bikes aren't stolen.

FYI, this guy Mike in Carpentersville always has lots of bikes for sale on Chicago CL. (No connection...) They are all over the map, but do seem to include a fair number of C&V bikes. If you were to drop by his place sometime, I expect you'd probably leave with a bike, maybe not the one you originally thought you were interested in though...

^ I had that same year Ironman Expert briefly. Excellent frame, awesome 'smoked' blue-on-white paint, and cool blue anodized Suntour GPX group. The late Accushift shifting seemed to work well too, though I did not really put it through any strenuous test. Judging by the head tube, I think this one is really 54--I had a 52cm one, CtC.

I have talked to him on the phone, and he seems like a legit flipper. He also has some really nice stuff pop up from time to time. There was an older Trek racing bike (or something like that) that he has thrown up from time to time. Newer Dura-ace stuff, brifters, ect IIRC. Like @smontanaro said he always has something. One of these days I want to make my way out to wherever he is since he seems to build up frames so I am guessing he'd have one I could get cheap and do it my own way.
If you search for his phone # on Craigslist his stuff pops up.

There is a guy in McHenry who also has a crapton of bikes. I bought a Raleigh Sports from him once and talked to him for a while. He works with a guy who does home foreclosure cleanouts. There seems to always be a dumpsterload or two of crap that these guys need to clean out of houses after the bank takes them. People just tend to move out and abandon stuff behind. These guys need to go in and haul it out after the bank takes possession and before any repairs can be made or the house is put on the market.
Much of the junk just thrown into the dumpster although they do let some authorized folks pick through it and save the really valuable stuff for resale. But the banks are always in a hurry and most of the bikes that are in basements and garages are worthless BSO's anyhow. This McHenry guy picks the better stuff out and brings it home.
He's got a lot of stuff from middle of the road all the way up to strange and rare bikes.

Maybe this is how Mike in Carpentersville, IL gets all his bikes? Last night a search for "Carpentersville" in Chicago CL turned up 58 bikes.

About 2-3 weeks ago I picked up a 91-93 (?) Miyata 914 in ready to go riding condition in a pearl white on ATLANTA CL. I also got an TREK 400 Elance that needed a lot of work for $140 (I had to talk the guy down from $200 pointing out all the dough I'd have to dump in to getting it "right")
I put a Shimano Ultegra crank, new yellow tires and cables (To match the yellow bottle cages), "leatherette" bar wrap and a Brooks seat to match (Picked up "new" from a friend on the cheap). Toughest thing was matching the paint with I "sort of did" with Testors Metallic
Blue and drops of Cobalt blue added in to deepen the hue to try to match the IMRON stuff. On the Miyata, it was ready to go but I have since put on a White San Marco saddle.

For all the guys like this sifting through these gold mines I still think that a lot of really nice vintage bikes and parts end up going to the scrap fire without anyone running the crusher/shredder/melting machines knowing what they are destroying.

My son asked one of the scrappers about this a year or two ago. The guy told him that there are people who pay them for "nice" bikes, more than their scrap value, so there is some hope that the better stuff is saved from the slow boat back to China.

What is a Vitus 979?
It is a vintage 1980s era frameset made famous by the Irish legend, the king-of-the-classics Sean Kelly. Kelly won 193 races in his career including 7 Paris-Nice, 2 Paris Robaix, and many, many others. He spent virtually his whole career racing and winning on Vitus 979 frames, stickered with his various team sponsor names, most notably Kas and Skil. Each time he would switch teams, along went his Vitus 979 bikes, because Sean loved the ride, light weight, and comfort of these legendary frames.
Why would you want one? Three reasons: first they have a wonderful ride, replicated by almost no other bike since. (The one possible exception are the Italian made Alan frames of the same era, because they were made in the same manner as the 979.) The Vitus tubes are bonded together with aerospace adhesive and have a ride that is more shock absorbent than any other bike ever created. The second reason is the Sean Kelly connection: imagine riding the exact same bike that one of the greatest cyclists of all time made famous. Reason three, is that we expect a lot of these frames to be purchased by riders who once owned one and have lusted after another one ever since. They are that good. From the 1980s era Vitus product catalog: Jointing by adhesives is a technique widely used in aerospace and aeronautics for the following reasons : - it has no influence or effect on the properties of the alloys forming the joint, contrary to jointing by welding or brazing, - it affords an even distribution of stress. - joints are sealed and protected, - there is a degree of elasticity which reduces shock, - mechanical properties are excellent, - there is a high degree of resistance to corrosion and to ageing. Bonded constructions give excellent results provided that: - the surface to be joined are scrupulously prepared before the adhesive is applied, - recommended procedure is carefully followed and time is allowed for hardening, - weight bearing surfaces and jointing surfaces are adequate and so designed that the amount of adhesive within the lugs can be precisely controlled. THE VITUS 979 DURALINOX FORK, its form revolutionary, from the head design to the new dimensions in the ovalization of the fork blades (33 x 18) has yet unheard of mechanical qualities that are superior to all good quality forks known today. The new dimensions in the ovalization of the fork blades (33 x 18) give the fork a stream line in perfect harmony with the head tube and thus eliminates the traditionally skimpy lines
