A little steep on the Trek, but it does appear to be pretty clean. This is the year with Campy Record.

I don't know the guy. But hey, if you're going to not sell something for $5900 you might as well not sell it for $15900. You'll not make more money that way.

Maybe he's just telling his wife he's trying to sell some bikes but people are just too cheap.

New to biking! The weather is getting nicer and I am tired of taking the bus to work, even though it's only 15 minutes bus ride, I figure I would have more freedom riding a bicycle to work.

Saw this on a local website and not sure if it's a good buy. I know nothing about bicycle other than the types of bike (road, mountain, hybrid, etc.).

I have the perfect solution for you.... Fly out to Phoenix for a nice vacation from the snow (88 out there today) and ride it back. If your wife won't do it, maybe some AZ illegal would like a free trip to MD... Never say I didn't try to help with your addiction/affliction...

That is a Centurion 'Dave Scott' Ironman Expert from 1989. It's a very nice bike. I had one, and if that one was local to me I'd be on my way to buy it rather than writing here.

The wheels have been changed out, the front having a Campagnolo Record hub; the rear is something Shimano. The Campy one is arguably an upgrade, maybe not the back.

I would not say this is necessarily the best commuter. It was sold as a racing bike back in the day. Will you be comfortable with the 'drop' handlebars? It could be adapted for more casual riding in an upright position of course but that is more work and expense.

Most importantly of all, it's a fairly small size, 52cm, and while that would fit me fine (5'6") will it fit you? It was being ridden by someone who was too tall for it--you can tell by how much seatpost is exposed.

It may need work, might have problems, but does look well cared for. $200 is a good deal.
I never think I have hit hard, unless it rebounds.

Thanks for your input! I have set up a time with the seller tomorrow to check out the bike! I am hoping the bike would fit me well and I will definitely be riding the bike home if all goes well. Any tips on checking the bike before making my decision?

Suggest you just peruse the forum history or start a new thread. (But be careful about revealing where you are---bikes 'outed' here have been known to disappear quickly.)

    Just a quick checklist:

Look for frame damage, which would show dents or creases in the tubing, sometimes just a ripple or crack in the paint. Usually in front. That's a dealbreaker, unless the bike is priced fairly for just the parts.

Check seatpost and stem to make sure they're not frozen/oxidized in place. You'll need the right metric allen keys for this. For the stem, loosen the allen, then rap on the top sharply, stem should come free. For the seatpost, just loosening the binder bolt and maybe a bit of pressure should do it. Both problems are common and while they can be overcome are pretty close to a dealbreaker--because you don't know how much work it'll take to fix them.

Are wheels straight when you spin them? Does everything turn smoothly? Brakes not grabbing right and shifters not working right are minor issues, usually just adjustments or cable replacements, but can be ways to bargain price down.

Don't worry about superficial scratches or minor rust spots. Or dirt--that can be your best friend as dirty bikes sell cheap.

    I'm sure I'm forgetting something.

Most of us assume with any old bike that it will need new brake pads, tires and tubes, cables, grease in wheel hubs, bottom bracket, etc. Having a bike shop do that can quickly add up into the hundreds, so any regular on this forum knows how to do their own work. In fact it's part of the fun.

Good luck and let us know how it goes! There are several threads about the Ironman here--as you'll see it's highly regarded.

This one might have some front end issues as the ad states that "it needs a new front wheel and fork" but, heck, for 300 clams, it is still worth looking into

I'm not 100% that this is a deal, but still a very nice bike.

    1986 Serotta 54cm Road Bike - $450 (North Raleigh)

This bike was a high end steel road bike back in the 80's. Remember the adage, "Steel is Real"? With Columbus steel tubing, the ride is sublime.
The original Shimano Dura-Ace components work flawlessly and are still in very good condition. (Crankset has scratches and scuffing)

A great starter road bike or a fanstastic bike for collectors looking for hard to find Dura-Ace IS components from the 80's. These components are extremely rare so it could be used for parts as well.

    Specs are:
Serotta (Columbus) 54cm Steel Road Bike (Silver)
Shimano 12 Speed IS (Indexed Shifting) Dura-Ace Components (Except for brake levers)
    6 Speed Cassette
Mavic GP-4 Tubular Wheels w/Dura-Ace hubs
    Tufo 700c Tubular Tires
    Pedals are not included

Looks like bike boom gaspipe. It will probably ride just fine after some elbow grease. For what it is, $100 is as high as I'd go. Plus, the plastic derailleurs need to be swapped out.

    EDIT: Er, Derailleur---singular. That is a 1 x 5.
