Yeah, hold out for 853. I think both 520 and 525 were introduced later in the 80s, but neither had the ride, or more importantly the cachet of 531.

Chasing down a link from those references, I saw this statement in a Reynolds overview doc:

For our steel products, the increasing brand number generally indicates higher strength based on the alloy content.

In that document, I don't see any figures for 531. Do they no longer make it?

853 and 631 are still made and used.

Bob Jackson cycles has a little bit on this on their website, but I am by no means an expert. I was interested in a frameset last year, and it wasn't clear if it was 525 or 531, that's why I looked into it.

No, not for many years now. But NOS tube sets are still available from e.g. Bicycle Classics.

Was this a good buy? $160 for a '77 Schwinn 3 speed Sturmey Archer Speedster in very good condition, all original components including a Schwinn sold (Union) head/tail light with generator. It also has pretty new Kenda tires made for the unique size these bikes use. I'm pretty sure I could have gotten the seller to take $20 more off cause he was trying to sell it Easter w/e with a -$20 discount, but I could see he was having a hard time letting it go so I didn't ask. Here's some pics

Why resist...worsse case...the bar end shifters are worth about $50 and, if that is a Brooks saddle, also worth about $50...you are left basically whole...with the frame and most of a bike!

That might be an Eisentraut-built frame. The fork crown at the KHS site is killing my eyes, though. The one for sale looks like it has a chromed and possibly lugged crown.

I know this is an old post i am replying to but the "too many" bikes always reminds me of the first time I heard a couple of now well known phrases.

I was in the LBS talking to a few enthusiasts and newbies. The ubiquitous topic - "How many bikes do you need?". One of our much favoured sale professionals walked by and casually stated, "Easy question - one more." You most likely have heard that before.

In the distant past, this particular sales also introduced to me to another oft repeated phrase. When I finally decided on the specifics of one of my "one mores", I hesitated and mumbled something about checking the budget with the wife. I of course received the sage advice of "Better to beg for forgiveness than to ask for permission". Forget which wife that was.

[h=2]1992, Chris Fat Chance, Yo Eddy, medium - $401 (Cottage Hospital Santa Barbara)[/h]

© craigslist - Map data © OpenStreetMap

(google map) (yahoo map)

condition: good size / dimensions: medium

Original owner owned since 1992, Chris Fat Chance, Yo Eddy, medium (I'm 5'8") mountain bicycle.

I put this bicycle together in 1992 at I Martin Imports in Los Angeles. Most of it's off road use was done in dry California.

Suntour XC Pro Crank, Ritchey Logic Brakes, Mavic Rims, Deore XT F & R Derrailleurs. Thompson Seat Post, Speedplay X1 pedals, True Temper Bars, '98 Rock Shock.. NOT included is original, True Temper fork, it's gone, . Come on by,
try it.

This bike was over $2,000 new and it was just tuned up. Of course it has its quirks; a non-structurally dented top tube, a chipped chain ring tooth, and outdated equipment.

If you're interested, please respond with your telephone number and "sweet ride" in the subject line so that I know you are not a 'bot..
thanks.

[h=2]Titanium~1995 Parkpre "Pro Elite" Frame - $375 (Downtown SB)[/h]

© craigslist - Map data © OpenStreetMap

(google map) (yahoo map)

For Sale is a Titanium Mountain Bike Frame made by Parkpre in 1995. Model is Pro Elite. This bike was at the top of the heap in it's day. I used it as a glorified cruiser as you can see in the pic's. Bike has been striped down to the frame and will include the seatpost/clamp and front derailleur. The decals have been removed but I included a before pic. Size is 21" though it doesn't feel that big compared to today's bikes. At 5'11" it was a perfect fit for me. (It was the largest they made) If you have a pile of the right parts this would make for a fun restoration. Calls preferred.

[h=2]$165 Vintage All Steel Specialized Stumpjumper Mtn Bike - Pristine Shape (Woodbury, MN)[/h]https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/wsh/bik/4450936782.html

Absolutely clean. Shimano Deore hubs spin like butter. Good tires. Everything works perfectly. Lubed, tuned and ready to ride. No rust. No dents. Great original paint. Paint chips have been touched up with matching paint (included).

The 1989 Specialized catalog says this bike has an all CroMo steel triple butted frame, double taper stays and a double butted CroMo steel fork.

UPGRADES INCLUDE: Shimano Deore XT rear derailleur, Shimano STX crankset (24-34-42), sealed bottom bracket, newer Shimano 7 speed rear cluster (11-28), Avocet Spenco Gel seat.

The frame is not quite my size. I was planning to convert the bike to an all-rounder or adventure touring bike. This model Stumpjumper is favored for such conversions because of the robust, light weight steel frame, 17" long chain stays, double butted steel fork and relaxed frame angles.

SIZE: Stand over height 31-1/2". Top tube 23" c-c. Seat tube 22" c-top.

FRAME SERIAL NUMBER: GX874993

Yes, but that's a UO-8. The give away is that the rear triangle doesn't have chrome socks. Also, the crankset is a cottered steel 3-pin 116 BCD.

No races could ever be won with a dork disk that massive.
