It may look like a Cinelli to the seller but it doesn't to me.

950 is too much for an early eighties mystery bike, even with the cinelli bb. It is something, but it's not like any cinelli I have seen. I would lean more towards an 84ish paramount, but the pic is kind of sketchy.

Needs a front wheel. Can't tell from the photos what model it is. The Ishiwata tubing says "400 series" to me (I thought 500 and above were typicall Reynolds). The seat tube decal suggests 80-83?

why do people desire the old ishiwata treks?

Trek 510 from that era is Ishiwata. In the early-mid '80s, 500 series was Ishiwata 022, 600 and 700 series was Reynolds 531, and 900 series was Columbus SL. From the photos, that could be most likely a 412, or it could be a built up 510 frame. Decal could be as early as 1978, out to 1983. I own a red 510 that I built as a touring bike with top tier Japanese components from 1979 with the same decal.

Because their frames were as good as the Reynolds and Columbus Treks, but they're invariably less expensive. When I bought my Ishiwata Trek frame in 1979, I had inside info from a builder at Trek that Trek's internal testing showed the Ishiwata 022 tubing to be the equal of the Columbus SL and Reynolds. But it was about $40 cheaper than the Reynolds, and $70 cheaper than the Columbus frames at the time.

Probably Ishiwata 022 which is all they used in the early 400 series from 1979 to 82, consisting of mostly 412 over those years with a year or 2 including the 414. These were sport bikes, meaning the geometry was in between a touring bike and a road bike, what we would call a cross bike today. Having owned a 79 412 I can tell you it had a very nice stiff frame with a surge to it when hammered that no other sport bike had and a lot of racing bikes didn't have! Trek equipped them with Suntour VXgt which was middle of the line stuff for Suntour but don't forget that middle of the line stuff shifted faster and more positive than the most expensive racing stuff from any manufacture on the planet at the time, but the VXgt stuff was a bit heavier than racing gear however it was very reliable.

Well, in those days, Trek only made bikes with Ishiwata 022, Reynolds 531, or Columbus SL. So really, there are no bad Trek frames from those days everything was double butted steel - the 412, which was a $365 bike 35 years ago in 1980, was the cheapest bike they made at the time.
