The problem is it wasn't an OBO ad. There was no price Or Best Offer. You never know when someone says "make offer" if they'll take $50. So it doesn't hurt to ask. And for the seller, it doesn't hurt to totally ignore us. I know that means my offer wasn't good enough.

I can. I won't box it myself, but I'll drop it at a shop. I also might be interested in one of the wheelsets so could chip in if you wanted.

Full 531 Trek, with needless "upgrades". It can be salvaged and returned to full glory though, and looks to be in decent shape. WAY, WAY too small for me.,,,,BD

I'd been looking for a Diamante for a while. Again, I'm looking for a facilitator. Somebody please?

You gotta love "The only parts that have been replaced on this bike from its original condition is the saddle, grips, tires, back derailleur, and back rack." Either it's valuable because it's original, in which case replacing the RD, seat, and grips is bad, or it's been carefully maintained but the only consumable that's been changed is the tires (and presumably the tubes).

You are right, I can usually tell level of collector or owner by ad and this usually means they are hoping to get all they can and don't know market, but many times means they will get a good amount of wasted time and end up selling cheap anyway. I did not even think of this but I picked up a super cheap bike that fits that, just not sure of having the time to do it.

I called then went and looked at a "Brev bike $1" ad I came across on CL this past weekedn and it stated "I know parts value, I did ebay evaluation, make good offer!" I think ad was not located by others due to name or ad turned them off. Got over there and frame had dent. so I backed that out, He said seat post was stuck (c record aero), backed that out, missing a campy pedal and no saddle, no value. He asked $150 when I called and I walked out at $60 for a full bike with c record, and chorus, cinelli bar/stem and a wheelseet (campy /mavic). To top it off, seat post came out easy compared to some I have done. I posted about the frame ID a couple days ago as it is very unique. Apparently his mom wanted bike out of house as he had 4 mountain bikes in her apartment. He had painted a house for moms caregiver and he took bike on partial payment since he likes bikes. I did my due diligence too, I told him, if you sell parts alone you will do well, it may take time but you can make more, he said nope I will take the $60. OK :-)

This ^^^ One thing I have found is that you have to ask, and not only about the bike but parts and tools even if you don't but the bike, I have picked up so much cheap stuff that way as it leads to conversation and people like to buy from or sell to people they like. It's human nature. I have only put a few items on CL and the idiots burn you out sometimes, I would rather deal with a legit cool person unless its a prized possession then I would hold out or put on the bay. Not everyone is hardcore collectors like us so they are ok letting it go cheap as there is no attachment.

I find it difficult to valuate that bike. I think some people either put car wax on their frames or clearcoat them which makes them more presentable.

So, would you be more comfortable with an ad stating $1000 OBO?

Perhaps more realistic would be $700 OBO. It probably won't go quite that high, but I would expect it to fall somewhere between $300 and $700.
I don't have problems with these as a couple have worked out fantastic for me (above and a Pinarello Record, Super). I will say I don't like the wait and see, and the thoughts that the seller will pit your offer against others to get a better price if you are highest though. I think that is what most don't like.

Anyway, since I blabbed here is my contribution. Something I have been watching to see where it goes or if it sells before I decide I want to try and do a deal. Supposedly is mid 70's (but is SR?), in storage, second owner and has less than 1k miles. I have something else on my radar first but this is the type of stuff I really like. Doing stuff like above and getting ahead allows for an occasional clean high end buy.

Every time I've gone to look at a bike (admittedly not that many), I've asked "Well, what else do you have?". No one's ever gotten upset that I've asked. At worst I've had a ten minute conversation about restoring old radios, or looked at a half restored bike I'm not interested in. At best they've thrown in a few odds and ends, or settled on a price more easily.

Intriguing bike for someone looking for a rider around 55cm. Claimed to be a Follis, though looks freshly powdercoated. Nice looking frame, and components that say "this frame is probably Reynolds" to me (Crane GS RD, Stronglight crank, Mafac racers). Looking for $150. Maybe reasonable depending on quality of powdercoat job.

Dave Scott Ironman Expert Centurion road bike (1988). This is a classic! Twelve speed. 35 inch standover height. Shimano 600 components. Recently tuned up. Light weight, and fun to ride!

$150 OBO.

Bike forums prices this bike at about $250, but looking to sell it before we move!

Something different for the vintage Japanese fan. Won't comment on the price but point deduction for the side stand. Otherwise, an interesting super clean machine.
56cm Dura-Ace Chrome Sutton Professional

[h=2]56cm Dura-Ace Chrome Sutton Professional - $450[/h]Absolutely incredible condition. 56cm seat tube center-to-center. Guarantee you will not find a vintage road bike in this condition. One owner bike. Barely touched, let alone ridden. Excellent blue paint. Fully chromed frame underneath the paint. Exposed chrome stays, forks, lugs, and seatstay caps. This was built in the early 1970's by Nishiki, for the American market.

100% original. 1st Generation Dura-Ace throughout, including low flange front and rear hubs, Shimano Crane GS (long drilled out cage, ~1971, this was the original Dura Ace component) rear derailleur, D-A brake levers, sidepull brake calipers, 170mm double crankset (with built in chainguard). The front derailleur is Shimano Titlist. The shifters are Shimano Fingertip stem shifters. I can include a set of Shimano or Suntour bar-end shifters.

Pictures dont do this bike justice. You have to see her to appreciate her.
