Strangely enough the prices aren't that high considering its handmade nature. A B.17 Standard is £45 here. If you catch a particularly good day for the exchange rate, the final cost can be surprsingly low.
...when I hear that the dollar is kicking butt against the Pound I always go check the price of Brooks saddles at sjscycles.

I just got a '76 Raleigh Mixte from CL and it had a crap Brooks saddle. It was not a "mattress" saddle it had two rails a plastic body and a quilted plastic cover. I was really surprised, but I guess they were common on the mid and low priced Raleigh for a while.

In that light, it makes sense, actually. If a new saddle is uncomfortable and an old one is comfortable, the old one should be more valuable, right? The counterargument is that the old one won't last as long, but it depends on how long. In other words, the arithmetic should work it out.

I dont want to imagine that massive ridge in the center pressing against my prostate. Was that saddle designed by the makers of Viagra to boost sales?

I have a maroon Hercules Royal Geoffery with mkeller234's saddle but in white, looks nice. & the winter Raleigh Record has a Brooks vinyl over foam over plastic seat, its far more comfortable than it has any right to be.

I'm riding a colt right now, it's a strange creaky (very) saddle with long skirt. I think this
was supposed to be more of a heavy touring type saddle? Looks really good, but the noise
is driving me nuts. oh yah, it is comfortable.
I wouldn't call it crap, more of a failed experiment.

Most Brooks saddles are made from leather. They did make a Vinyl saddle that I have seen on some Raleigh 3 speeds. However, I have never seen a Brooks crap saddle. I don't think crap is durable enough and it is too soft. Rain would destroy it and it would smell bad, but that is true of their leather saddles as well.
Judging from my experience with cat and dog crap- I would not spend ANY money on a saddle made from crap.
I did have a Brooks mattress saddle that came on the Raleigh Sprite that I owned. It was a bad saddle. I did not like it even a little bit. It was made of plastic, metal and pleather. Not crap.

Sorry about the tiny picture size, this is snipped from a full-bike photo. It's a Brooks "Competition" saddle - very light Chromoly rails, plastic base with padding and leather top - I'm guessing it might be from the 1980's or early '90's? The Brooks logo is in the usual place on the rear edge of the saddle, but is printed in yellow. Actually not a bad ride at all, I bought it very cheaply and it appeared unused. It's one of those saddles that you just don't notice when riding it, so it obviously doesn't rub anywhere crucial! I'm wondering if this is the one Noglider was talking about in his post on this thread a looooooong time ago? (And maybe in a galaxy far far away ????

One thing I noticed is, the prices for used Brooks saddles seems to have stabilized in the last couple of years. I've seen some really good conditionones (even with the always sought after big copper rivets) still go for very reasonable prices.
Which I think kinda proves that there were enough of these saddles made and still out there, so that they do not acquire that dreaded "Unobtainium" status that could frustrate many of us C&Vers really needing one for a project bike....Any way, if you can't find an old one, you can always just buy a new one and they still look and feel right....

Hello there and happy New Year to all!
Regarding the above, that is absolutely incorrect. This is a wonderful forum and I have a permanent link to it on Lovely Bicycle's sidebar as a resource for readers. My absence has been due in part to time constraints, in part to feeling that I don't have much to contribute, and in part to having forgotten my password after some time went by.
Once again I wish everyone a Happy 2014, and thank you for keeping this great place going.
