Derailleur on Track ends?

I've got a SS/FG Raleigh One-Way (not a C&V frame, but it wears C&V parts) that I'm considering putting some gears on. Its got horizontal track dropouts in the rear though.

Am i limited to an IGH or is there a way to put a derailleur on? Is there some way you can hang a derailleur off the rear wheel axel?

Some TT bikes have "track" ends with a derailleur hanger. So you could try a "claw" bolt-on hanger. Not elegant but it works I guess!

I considered that but its really meant to work on dropouts that face forward, not rearward. would it be safe?

I think I would try it...

https://www.loosescrews.com/index.cgi...d=437464524974

It would make removing the wheel a pain, and potentially lead to occasional readjustments based on the wheel removal... But between the axle and the little bolt/nut, if there is room for the nut to grip, I think it should work.

But, I have never tried it.

the main concern would be the spacing in the rear I think.

Yes, safe, but turning the typical Campagnolo compatible claw around will place the stop on the wrong end, if running a Huret or Simplex no rework would be needed. Or an older Shimano changer that did not really use the stop they were spring loaded and had tabs to retain. Fabricating a claw is another possibility.

Way back guys did it, or had a tab brazed onto the bottom of the track end.

If you want indexing to work, the dimensioning and offset to centerline will have to be taken into account.

try this:
https://www.downcycles.com/store/comp...-c-52_183.html

there are lots of replaceable derailier mounts, perhaps one of can be modified and bolted on to the dropout.

I have a couple of the Pyramid claws, so I can experiment with those. I also have a 120mm spaced 5 speed rear wheel which will fit fine.

Would I be better off using an Internal geared hub here? I've got a 3 speed sitting around.

I actually originally bought that 3 speed wheel to put on this bike last winter but ended up just not doing it. It might be a good time and would be better for the winter than exposed gears.

A friend has his track frame converted to geared by brazing a hanger cut from an old frame to the track dropout. Weird looking, but worked OK.
