Old cassette on new rim?

Hi, I am wondering if my 1985 campy 7-speed will fit on new Mavic Aksium rims? Thanks.

edit: the bike has record hubs.

Could you please clarify your question? Please see Sheldon's bicycle glossary. I think you're using the word "rim" as if it means "wheel".

Hello. your "campi 7 speed" is a freewheel yes? I do not recall Campagnolo making cassettes in 1985. I just looked at the mavic website and do not see a freewheel hubed version of these wheels listed to I will say no it will not fit.

ahh ok I didn't know there was a difference. it is a freewheel for sure.

i wanted the Aksium Wheelset.. but I think it may be better to build something up with my record hubs.

or---

what if i put a new 7speed cassette on the Aksiums? will everything work? the drivetrain on my bike is all campy super record. (so i am told).

so your told? this is where pics help. the spacing will be wider but since you are using a steel frame you just need to fiddle it into the dropouts.

you shifter does not click? then yes you could use these wheels and 7 or 8 speed casette to good effect. you will need a small spacer behind the 7 speed cassette though.

I can only find Shimano 7speed cassettes, even on ebay. Can I use Shimano with Campy chainrings?

or would I be better off using my hubs and a rebuild..? I dont want to spend any money at all, but there is this little crack in my rim and I'm worried about having a spoke blow out 40 kms from home.

Hello nice loking Vitus? AH OK well the issue is comming to the surface. if your wheel is cracked near a spoke eyelet (or anywhere for that matter) yes you should replace it. and in your case you may be able to do so quite easily. check the classifieds here and on ebay for 7 spd wheels. you can put your freewheel on most anyother freewheel style wheelset. also most any shimano 7 spd cassette wheelset should not be a problem. the spacing is different and you will have to fiddle witht he wheel a biot to mount it but a 8spd should work OK too.

on the cost of rebuilding your wheel is about $90 ($2 a spoke x36 plus labor $25-30) plus the cost of the rim.

The askiums come in two flavors: shimano 7/8/9/10 speed compatible and campy 9/10/11 speed compatible. If you have the shimano compatible askiums you can use a shimano cassette no problem. You could also use an 8 speed cassette with your current setup and have more gears to choose from!
