Are you the guy in Ann Arbor?

If so, I've been looking, no luck so far.

Is this the front freewheeling crank?

I have an entire front freewheeling Selecta crankset & bottom bracket assembly in nice condition that I removed from a '76 Schwinn Superior. The arms are 170mm and are a splined mount. The rings are 52/40 with guards on both rings.

If you want it you can have the entire assembly for the cost of shipping.

I picked up a bike that had one of those a couple of years ago, and I replaced the freewheel, thinking the original one was seized. Boy, was I stupid! Well, the bike sold, and the buyer didn't mind that both the crank AND freewheel clicked!
What was the idea with that crank anyway? What problem were they trying to solve?

Since the chain continues to move while coasting you could shift gears even if you weren't pedaling. Why you would want to do that I'm not sure. I suspect what Shimano was trying to do generally was find ways to make bicycles more user friendly to non-cyclists so as to increase the potential customer base. That was just an idea that never went anywhere.
