Schwinn Traveler vs Raleigh Olympian
' thinking of giving away my '88 Schwinn Traveler to a family member and replacing it with a Raleigh Olympian (downtube shifters, ' not sure of the year) from CL. Both bikes are in great shape. I'm just wondering which one is the better bike.
Should I keep the Traveler and give away the Olympian or go the other way. Please advice. Thanks!

The Raleigh was between a entry and mid level bike, while the Schwinn was a mid level bike; in other words the Schwinn would be the better bike.

I can't give a direct answer, not knowing anything about the Raleigh.
But I've had two Travellers in my life and they were both great bikes. I'd be reluctant to switch.

In fact that's the same year and color of the Traveler I too owned at one time. It was a tad heavy but it also was a touring bike and most touring bikes are a tad heaver; but it was a decent bike with decent components. Speaking of heavy I bet the Raleigh weighs at least 5 pounds more then the traveler.
I would keep both, but if you must get rid of one then I still stand by what I said earlier. The Traveler would be more useful with it's 10 speed vs a 3 speed whose transmission would probably be more difficult to get parts for then the Traveler.
The reason I would also keep both is because the Raleigh probably has some degree of classic value to it that the Traveler doesn't have at this time.

Their was a Raleigh Olympian ('83) near me on Craig's List recently. If I am correct, it was a Raleigh of America (Huffy) product. Looked as though it had nice features, including a double-butted chrome moly frame. From what I understand, the reviews of it weren't that great. They supposedly made sourcing things inexpensively a main priority. It still looked like a pretty decent bike at the lower-end of the mid-range spectrum. The safety levers on the brakes caught my eye.

Thanks to all for the info.
Unfortunately, the Olympian was sold before I can get to it.
It sold or $40. It was near mint condition. I now wish I never found out.
