My new Trek Elance 400
I just picked up my first road bike a ~86 Trek Elance 400D. It's my first vintage bike as well. (It qualifies right??)
Here are some pics
It's not in perfect shape, slight rust and chipped paint, but mostly original. I got it from a local pawn shop for $175 in basically this condition. I will be using it mainly for commuting and tri-training. I'm thinking I want a Brooks with possibly the Brooks leather bar tape. I'll also need a rack and some panniers. Any opinions? I want to keep that old school look.

Looks in pretty good shape to me. Should be a nice rider. Not exactly a tri machine in this configuration, but it will get you started.

I've got one just like yours in a slightly different configuration that is my beloved daily commuter; the more I ride it the more I love it. Great bike at a great price and I think you will be delighted at how nice it rides.

i'd say you did well.
i have the exact same model, year and color trek, but 25.5" frame. unfortunately it's about an inch too large for me, otherwise i'd be keeping it for sure.

The paint on those Elance Bikes is wonderful... err rather, the paint and the clear coating. I've come across a couple in Madison over the last few years and both looked as if they had just come off the show room floor.

Thats a sweet bike, you'll love it. Treks lugged frames are probably some of the nicest "riders" out there in my opinion.
I've got a 1985 400 model (not as nice as yours) and I'd have a real issue if I lost it for any reason, I ride it daily.
Cheers

How a about a new '89 Trek 400? This bike now has grey Look clip-less pedals and I have replaced the worn original bar wrap. I ride the bike 23-30 miles a day. A friend was moving and gave me the bike. The tires are new.

I love the black Trek. Here is my Elance 400T.
Just sold it about a week ago to a friend. I had a hard time selling it. The ride was really nice and it was quite fast. Sorry about the chain guard. I tried removing the freewheel but with the tools I had it was impossible. I picked up another Trek 400 International just last weekend and I should have some pics up as soon as I am done finishing her up.
