I saw a 62 or 64CM Italian bike hanging in back of LBS...
forgot phone (as in no camera) and name of bike... M somehting... all Campy... mis matched wheel other than that stock issue stuff...
dude is high as hell he thinks it worth $4,000 or more...
I go back on Thursday I will get pic...
pop some names and maybe it will refresh my mad cow spongy brain!!!

that could be worth some money, but $4000 would be pricing for one of the top-shelf frames with all the best components.
Antonio is still building with steel...here's an eBay auction for a used one priced at $3500 and seller says they "go for $6000".

I can see a Mondonico fetching $4k quite easily. They're rare and getting rarer (in the States), they're handmade in Italy by the family they are named after. Plus, if it's vintage, the age will add to the base price and just keep adding as the years go on.
A complete Mondoncino with Campy (my guess would be the LBS isn't sparing on quality) - yeah $4k is pretty average.
You also have to consider that the builder is figuring in time, effort spent, and cost of handpicking the components.
I think $4k is within the reasonable range of a custom built Italian artisanal steel bike on this side of the Atlantic.
That's about what I spent to build mine.
