My Brooks is bleeding-is yours?

My newish Imperial that's been ridden about 500 miles or less is leaving black stains all over my shorts. In fact there's only one pair of shorts I'll ride on that bike & saddle. I've applied Proofide once but have never had any problems with any colors rubbing off on my 2 other Honey B-17's.

I've heard of that happening lots of times with leather saddles. I assume that is why the well used ones have that worn dark brown color to them (which looks great).

The husband and I have 7 Brooks saddles between the two of us (brown, honey, and green) and none of them have bled.

Only time I've ever encountered this was after I had proofided. I wear black on freshly conditioned seats now.

I'm breaking in a new black B-17. The outer surface has been given one light dose of Proofide, and the underbelly has had 3 doses thus far. No black stains have appeared. And I tend to ride in tan or off-white shorts on.

Ditto for my also-new B-66.

I have a VERY dry and brittle old Brooks saddle that I flooded with proofhide to attempt to save.

I rode to work on it and sometime midday one of the gay guys came in and said, "What's that all over your a$$?" I looked and my blue jeans were covered in brown from the saddle.

I then yelled at all my guys working for me, saying, "Why didn't anyone tell me I had this big brown stain on my jeans all day???"

They said, "Huh, didn't notice".

Go figure.

Funny. Back in the 70's all my jeans had staining from my Ideale and Brooks saddles. And most of my pants had a chainring mark on the right leg.

I don't think that applies here, since many will agree that cycling shorts are black for other reasons. Sheldon writes that oiling a dyed leather saddle will cause staining. Proofide is wax based unlike Neatsfoot oil and my other Black B-17 never left staining on light colored shorts as others have posted. I'm hoping the Imperials will be offered in Honey soon.
