Who made these Schwinn Approved Hubs?
 

Who made these Schwinn Approved High Flange hubs? Inside says Schwinn Approved -1-73 Made in France. The holes and the measurements are different than a 1974 High Flange Normandy hub that I have.

I'm pretty certain it was Normandy, which as I understand is the same as Atom and Mallard. Sort of like the difference between Cadillac, Buick, and Chevy.

Recently I came across a set of Schwinn Approved high flange hubs (I believe I took off a Varsity because they are nutted), that look just like yours, but they say "Made in Japan."

My all time favorite hubs are the high flange "Normandy" ones which came on my '62 Continental.

That is funny. I never realized that Normandy/Atom/Maillard were all under one roof.

The guy I bought them from said that he thought they were Atom's. My '74 Normandy Hub that I have came with a Maillard quick release.

PB: Do those wingnuts on your hubs hold the wheel securely?

I have those same wingnuts marked Huret Luxe on my Peugeot. I have never had any problems with them keeping the tire in place, but when commuting....I'll probably look down at 'em and worry.

Wing nuts turned out to be a really bad idea for rear wheels. Pedaling torque makes the wheel slide forward, and you had to keep retightening the wing nuts.

As I recall, they used the name Atom for small flange hubs and Normandy for large flange hubs. I don't know why.

I agree with Pastor Bob that the picture at the top is of a Normandy-made Schwinn-approved hub.

The wingnuts hold my rear wheel with no problems. I guess I have a good grip and a strong twist!

worked on a rear wheel today that had that same skewer and was and Atom.

I always used the otherside of a cresent wrench for tightening
rear wing nuts. always worked for me.
