Wacky Avocet Cycle 20 Bike 'Computer'

I guess this belongs in the C&V...

I started riding again and put in new batteries in my Avocet about 2 months ago. The Avocet was working fine until about a month ago.

According to the computer, I am really cranking at 25/26/28 mph. I am not. It seems to be flipping at regular mph to maybe kph. Not quite sure what is going on. Sometimes it stays at the higher Lance mph/kph and sometimes it reverts back to my regular mph.

Ok, what is going on? Is it time for me to make the move to the present (bike computer wise)?

I have a 20 year old Avocet that I cherish...

Is the magnet ring secure? Is the battery in securely? Did the wheel size calibration? That's about all I can think of. It might be toast. I wanted to put one on my second bike, but they don't make them any more, so I got this:

A nice simple basic 5 function under $20 similar to the Avocet.

I'm another Avocet 20 owner/user that just successfully resurrected the computer after almost 20 years of sleep in my garages. I agree with oldpedalpusher. take off the battery and doo a full reset and recalibrate the computer. The Avocet internet site has all the information on how to do you calibration. Also make sure you defintely have the correct sized/type battery in there. Avocet notes that the originally specified battery for the computer which was mercury based, is not available anymore and they provide the information on the proper currently available substitute.
Good luck and tell us how the fix goes before resorting to getting a whole new computer.

You didn't state whether it's wireless or not. I use a VDO 15+ and have used other wireless computers and didn't have a problem untill I got a cell phone. My phone jumps my max to 95 and average to 59 everytime I leave it on while I ride. If it's wireless, take it in the house, let it go to stand-by and move your phone close to it to see if it starts reading. I always leave my phone off til I really want to use it.

Just a thought.

I have an Avocet 40 that I like because it registers a reading quickly. That's because the sensor has 3 magnets, IIRC. Unfortunately the Avocet began to reset at random times. I think the battery loses contact because the small battery compartment lid is loose. The website indicates that spare parts are not available. So I replaced it with a simple wired Cateye Strada.

You should try to clean the contacts on the back of the Avocet and mounting bracket. Also assure that the wires are securely attached to the pickup sensor. You can also open the case by prying at the seam with a dull knife. It just snaps together. Then you can clean the contacts on the circuit board.

Mine also had replacement battery sizing issues.. so I just cut out a little circular piece of innertube to take up the slack.
