26" or 28" wheels ???

Hi, I am a newbie to this forum and am after some advice

Firstly, I am not sure if this is the correct area to post this thread, so if it is not I would like to apologize in advance.

Basically, I have bought an old and cheap Hercules bike frame. I plan to build a simple bike that I will primarily use for riding 2km into town every now and again etc...

I purchased the frame from Ebay, and it was advertised that is supports the wheel size 26". I was wondering if it would be possible to fit 28" wheels to this frame ???
I am assuming not as the brake positioning may miss (be too low) with the use of a 28" wheel ???

If anyone could advise me if this would be a possible option or not before I buy some wheels, and if so any difficulties involved, it would be greatly appreciated.

I have attached a picture of the frame (in case it helps)

Kind Regards,
Jon.

It probably won't fit the 28". aka 700c or 622mm(ISO) Easiest way to find out is take the frame to the bike shop and test fit a wheel.

It originally had the 26" x 1 3/8" or 590mm wheels. aka EA 3 or 650A size.

You could use some Schwinn S6 26" x 1 1/4" wheels; aka EA 1 or 597mm but I wouldn't.

The regular 26" wheel with decimal widths is the standard "mountain bike" wheel. It's a 559mm. Get the narrow ones; your frame probably can't handle a 26" x 2.0" tire.

Or, get the 650B/584mm/26" x 1 1/2" not as common as the mountain bike size but better fit for your frame.

Hi "bbattle" - thanks for your reply.

What you talk about the 26" standard mountain bike sized wheel: "Get the narrow ones; your frame probably can't handle a 26" x 2.0" tire", would I be able to fit a race bike tire to this wheel ???

I would like to (if possible) fit race bike (this) wheels / tires to the frame - would this be possible with the stated wheel (above) or are there any race style wheels that would fit the frame ???

Thanks again,
Jon.

You've maybe picked the wrong frame to design a race bike around. The 700c wheel rims will likely fit but you won't find a wheel set made up with hubs that will fit.
88mm spacing in the front drops and 112mm in the rear drops will be a difficult set of hubs to find. A old school BMX ss freewheel hub will fit in the rear, but a traditional steel raleigh hub from a 3 speed is about it for the front hub.

The frame spacing sounds perfect for a Sturmey AW rear hub. Since you might ride it one in awhile to town (2km) unless it's all up hill the 3 speeds will work. It's possible to build a 700c or 27inch wheel on a SA hub by the way. Tim

Try the 700s but 26x1 3/8 is a great size for a tire and you can get them cheap.
