My mther went to a garage sale this morning and called me telling me they had two bikes. One is a Free Spirit 10 speed. The other she says is a "Tempo". After a quick search I was thinking it might be a Schwinn Tempo, but she says it doesn't say Schwinn anywhere and on the badge on the head tube it also says Tempo. I've never heard of it. Is it just a cheapo bike that's not worth my time or what?

There's one parked at my apartment complex. I also looked into this, and couldn't find any information on a "Tempo" brand, but that bike's definitely not a Schwinn.

I'd lump it in the same category as a Free Spirit. For the price to buy it and make it work, you could buy another bike 1 or 2 levels above.

That's what I figured. I had her pick up the Free Spirit because the price was low enough. I've found that no matter what the brand, people around here will buy a bike that doesn't need any work and rides nice for $30-40. If I can buy a Free Spirit for $10 or less and it doesn't need any parts, but just a quick tune-up I can make a quick $20-30 and get somebody else on a bike.

There used to be a department store called "Tempo". Ours went out of business in the late '70s. Perhaps this was a bike that store chain had branded for themselves, much like the Free Spirit was Sears' brand.

Just speculating.
