Here's My 64 in progress, I will update it as I get more and more stuff redone on it. I wanted to wait longer before posting it but it looks so good already I couldn't wait any longer. The only thing being replaced on this bike will be the handlebars because they are not original and the spokes because they are too rusted to remove so I have had to cut them out. Everything else will be the actual parts that came factory with the bike, down to the bearings. Well tires and tubes of course

Yes as well as all the internals to it, the springs washers etc. I should be getting the crankset back next I will update this post as they roll in.

If the paint job is still intact, keep it. A powdercoat is advisable only when there's severe damage. Any steel frame protected from the elements should last a lifetime.

yeah its already been powder coated then i put NOS stickers on it, everyone has their own preferences on what an old bike should look like. I wasn't going to chrome it all out then leave the dull scratched up paint on it, thanks for looking

Just a little update, not quite done but very very close. All original except pedals and grips both of which I am working to remedy. Once complete I will have photographer friend get good pics to share.

it was chipped all to hell and very dull, we polished and rechromed everything else so i wasn't going to leave it that way. if i wanted it to be left alone i would have just got handlebars and been done then it would just be another bike like all the ones sold on craigslist all day long for nothing. i wanted a restore project and soemthing my dad and i could work on together not just buy bars and be done.

It looks as if some Meguiars Scratch X and some bronze wool on the brightwork could have revitalized it very easily.

Sure wool makes for a good temporary fix, but all that does is clean the rust off. it does not remove the pits that cause the rust in the first place.that's right, you will be having to clean it off again over time. once you take the steel down to the bare metal with glass bead then re-plate it it will not rust again. everything was really, really rusty and seems though the before picture doesnt detail this. of course the alum doesnt rust but we polished it all anyways, because we can.

Thank's for the compliment, the chrome was free or I wouldnt have messed with it. My dad has been doing old school decorative chrome over 40 years. I really look forward to sharing some better pictures of it all once its done. We "he" polished and chromed everything,chain,all bolts,nuts down to the springs under the saddle.

I realize some people rather see it look its age but everyone has their preferences and thats what these sites are all about.

There are over 500 bicycles owned by members of this forum who may disagree as to how "temporary" bronze wool and polish is, but if you have the access to free replating, heck - why not?

Paint, on the other hand, rarely looks the same following a repaint - and repop decals never look the same as silkscreening.

Agreed on the paint, decals I put on there are actually NOS water decals. I kind of hosed them up but I have 2 sets so I will be redoing them but will have to apply some type of finish over them so the adhere to the powder coat better. Any suggestions?

I don't understand why people get all upset about somebody refinishing an old bike. The things were produced in the 1000's and it's not like it is a bike of historical significance (i.e didn't win the Tour De France or something stupid like that) I think it looks great and probably in better nick than when it came out of the factory.

Everything is complete I just haven't had time to get it all together. I will be hopefully this week now that its warming up and I might have a little spare time spring break.
