Very nice bikes.
Look on the head badge for four small, lightly stamped digits. This number represents the assembly date of the bike. The first three digits are the day of the year (001-366), and the last digit is the last digit of the year (a "1" would be 1981).

Did you get it off the Chicago CL? It looked like a really nice bike, and I love my 86.

No,i actually got it from a small cafe in the town I live in.I was talking to the owner about bikes{he saw one of mine} and told me he had this old Chrome schwinn his mom gave him when he graduated college in 1981.The bike is beautiful. It still has the gold freewheel and chain, original saddle, and cloth wrap.

Like Everhandy says, there should be four digits. They could have screwed up when they stamped it, I suppose.

I think Schwinn offered the Voyageur in chrome only in 1980 and 1981. They are nearly identical in all respects and it's hard to tell which year you may have but I would guess 81 judging from the serial number.
In any event, a very nice bike!
I hate to ask, how much did you pay for it?

Here's what the assembly date code looks like on Schwinn head badges in the late seventies, eighties, and early nineties.
The top one, 1095, was assembled on the 109th day of 1985 ('85 Schwinn Tempo).
The bottom one, 2829, was assembled on the 282nd day of 1979 ('79 Schwinn Traveler).

Hate to bump up a dinosaur, but I have a chrome 11.8 that I am restoring. My head badge also has only 102. Not covered by a rivet or anything. Only 102. My bb serial also starts with 81. I will post pics of both when I get off work. Thanks in advance.

It could be this one: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...l#post16881903
Here is another with only a 3 digit stamp (078), which may have been characteristic of many if not all '81 Voyageurs: https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-vi...barn-find.html

Mine is a 25", one of the ones pictured in that thread is definitely not a 25". From my limited research, they are all 078 or 102.

Is it original? I think the only difference between an 80 and an 81 was which pedal was used. An 80 had flat platform rat traps and an 81 had quills.

Thanks. The bb serial had me pretty certain that it was an 81 anyway.
