PEUGEOT-82-help!!!

'aiight peeps, here's the deal.

I just bought an '82 Peugeot Super Competition. The serial no. is B2037932. The fram and fork are both labeled as Reynolds 531. There is minor surface oxidation, but nothing penetrating or easily fixable.

...knowing it's an old French frame, my biggest concern is being able to find appropriately fitting parts. It has a BB and head/stem currently installed, and previous owner says they are both functional. He says the BB is a Sugino, which he says is British.

I am very new to road bikes (and bikes in general), so my knowledge is strictly based on what I've read in this forum and such. I am getting the frame, fork, stem/headset, and BB... I plan on building the bicycle as a single-speed/fixie to commute in Minneapolis with.

What say you? Considering the British BB, what specs do I need to look for when I look for chainrings, cranks, etc?

Any suggestions/comments much appreciated; thanks in advance!

Hi Samuel,

Nice bike! The biggest factor in your build will be getting the chainline right. Depending on your budget, you can either get a dedicated set of SS/fixed wheels or convert an older set of wheels to SS use. Getting the chainline correct means that the chainring in front is in the same plane as the cog in back. The rear cog determines where this plane is relative to the centerline of the bike frame. So first, get a rear wheel with either a SS freewheel or fixed cog on it. After this, you will need to find a crankset and BB combination that puts the front chainring in the correct position. There isn't an easy way to do this unless you buy all new parts, it's mostly a matter of trial and error and/or adding spacers to adjust the BB a bit.

Your BB is square taper. The BB shell is almost certainly 68mm. So, you will need a 68mm, square taper, english threaded BB and square taper crankset. The big variable is the spindle length of the BB which will determine the chainline in front for any given crankset. I'd suggest reading up in the SS/fixed forum here on what's involved. Another option would be to find a local bike coop and bring your bike there. Using a new BB/crankset combination will be more $$ but will take a lot of the guesswork out of things.

My knowledge of '80s Peugeots is sketchy, but I doubt that your bottom bracket is English.

I'm guessing someone installed a BSA/British BB into a Swiss threaded frame. Not a big deal.
