Mavic 501 Hub - 126 to 130 Axle
Converting an old 501 hub from 126 to 130 - anybody know where I can get a replacement axle or comparable substitute?
Thanks! 55/Rad |
Now that is a challenge! I don't think a 130 was made for that hub. The 500 only came with 126 axles. I have a pair.
I did convert to a 7 speed without having to stretch. See pic below. If you were to get an axle, what purpose would it serve? Didn't 501 only accomidate freewheels? http://i985.photobucket.com/albums/a...o/PA121374.jpg |

would the axle/spacers from their MTB hub swap in/out? it should be 130mm for early MTB use, but maybe larger diameter.

I thought of an 8 speed as well. There are a number of warnings about bent axles as a result. I would maintain that the Mavic axles might be strong enough. This is what it looks like:

I changed out an older Campy hub to 130mm with an 8 speed freewheel. Rode it hard for months without a hitch....'twas a different type of axle however. 55/Rad |
I also would like to go from 126 to 130 on my Mavic hub. I searched briefly online and found this bikelist thread from Peter White.
There were three rear hub bodies, and 4 model designations, of Mavic freewheel hubs. The first (500) had a cap over the right side bearing. They cannot become 130mm. The second (550) had the right bearing exposed. They can become 130mm, but the dish is a bit high, sort of like Campy rears are now. The third (501) and fourth (531) have the colored band on the left side. Green came with an axle that could be either 130mm seven speed, or 135mm seven speed. Grey came with an axle that could be either 126mm 7 speed, or 130mm 8 speed. The hub shells were identical except for the color of the band, and the axles could be swapped between models. I don't have the proper FW tool so can't say yet if I have the 500 or 550 (no colored band). And if I have the 550, I wouldn't know where to get a 130mm axle. |
disassemble the axle and take it to your local machine shop. Have them duplicate it with 4mm longer. Specify how much on which end and where. You need to know where the Hub needs to be with the longer axle. For an 8 speed you may only need to split evenly, 2mm per side. I don't know how much more is needed to accomidate the extra sprocket. From the pictures I posted, you can tell that the 7 speed freewheel easily fit in the 126 spacing for what was a 6 speed freewheel.
I saw a chart of thickness' of freewheels but don't recall where it is. I looked on Harris, but no. |
For what it is worth, I have the same issue and with no resolution other than forgetting it and moving on to a cassette type freewheel.

i think i might actually have a mavic 501 or 531 spaced at 130. i'll check later.
