~1965 Viking "Hosteller Model"

This is my recent rebuild. It is a 1960ish Viking. I am guessing the date based on when the emblem was changed and the date they stop producing bicycles. I purchased this bike for $40 dollors at an antique store. Knowing nothing of the bicycle at the time I later discovered that I had stumbled across a pretty good deal. Overhauling the bike was interesting. Cottered crank, loose bearings in the bottom braket. It was a fun build. I wish I had before pics because the bike was not pretty when I got it. After lots of stripping and sanding, fresh powdercoat and some new parts this is the result.

I just today purchased a 70's Schwinn three speed, It's not in to bad condition. I plan on re-building it for re-sale. Will post pic's later.

Nice looking bike. What color bar tape are you thinking (and turn 'em down a little)

Good restoration! The fork might be a period upgrade. All of the 1960's "Hosteller" models I used to see on club touring weekends in the early 1970's had a pretty nondescript looking generic flat crown. The double plate crown on yours looks a whole lot better! What brakes are you going to fit?

Not sure yet. I would like to find some pretty rare ones though. I will probably ebay until a set really catches my eye. I just have a weinmann 999 on the back now. Yeah I like the fork too. I would have used the original but the stem was complete stuck. I did everything in my power to get it out but was never sucessful. I am going to get an exact replacement stem and just run this fork.

Sounds like a plan! The Weinmann 999 centre-pulls or Mavic Racer/Competition would be period correct, or you could go for some side-pulls i.e. Modolo, Campy Record with script name engraved on the arm, Weinmann 508 or 600, GB (if you can find any!) or similar. Anything dual pivot or Shimano would look totally wrong, even though they are good brakes. Those forks are brilliant on that frame. Show pics of finished bike please!

Pretty bike. Simple, well proportioned. I like chrome forks. Can't say why.

Nice - what happened to the chrome fork?
And where did you get the 'natural' cork tape?

The chrome fork was not original. I finally pressed out the stuck quill on the original fork. The tape is Salsa.
