Is it me... I keep thinking bullhorn handlebars...
I got back on the bike recently and most of my recent posts describe my re-introduction to cycling...
So I started commuting on the local MUP (W&OD) trail here in Northern VA and I kept seeing these approaching cyclist and kept thinking '...that's odd, another bullhorn handlebar, what's the deal...' Well, I realized that every time I thought that it was a bullhorn handlebar, it wasn't. These are the new, modern (to me) brifter bikes with ergo handlebars. These brifters are so prominent and stick out so much that they make the handlebar look like a bullhorn handlebar.
IMHO, I think the setup looks pretty ugly and complicated. Yes, I know, I am prehistoric and dated but am I the only one with this thought?

Not the only one. Brifters maybe the best invention since the self-opening beer bottle, but I think they're inelegant. Much prefer the older cleaner look of DT shifters, myself.
Am also in NoVA, we should ride sometime.

Not pretty, but they do work. I much prefer the looks of Campy Ergo over the Shimano STI, however.

Debate about looks aside, I will say that Shimano brifters are much more comfortable than Shimano non STI brake levers, which are little hatchets.

I'll second that. I know that modern Tektro/Cane Creek aero brakes aren't "correct" on older bikes, but they are a far cry more comfortable than the old Shimano levers I've ridden.

I went from Shimano 105 aero levers to Campy Ergos (1999-2000 or so) then back to Shimano aero levers.
During the move to the Ergos, those things seemed so bulky in the hands and too squarish of a profile.
During the move back to Shimano aero brake levers, ouch, they sure seemed to cut right through your thumb flap (or whatever you call that part of the hand, hehehe).
I'm back to being used to them now, though.

Yet it still works. My car is complicated....therefore I no longer want it.
