New bike -in a time capsule for 20+ years - (img heavy)

Without further ado I present you my latest bike (a birthday present to myself):

Appropriately named "mighty magenta", my 1987 Schwinn Super Sport came yesterday in the UPS truck:

I was extremely happy to find out that it was all original, down to the Schwinn-branded tires and San Marco leather "racing" saddle, with the only exception being the handlebar tape (full specs are here). This bike was assembled in January 26, 1987 and does not seem to have been ridden more that 500 miles since. Seems that it started life in Wichita, KS and came to me (in PA) through St. Elmo, AL. Few nicks but extremely clean overall.

Have a look:

We went for a quick ride today in my local park just to check the assembly and whether everything is working as it should be or adjustments needed to be made. Happy to report that this is an extremely great ride and it is a keeper. It is a bit bigger that what I am used to (it is a Schwinn size 23 - 58.5 CT) but I love the ride. I will change the seat to something more appropriate, the straps to leather and the tires to gators (but keep the original parts around). The cork tape will be changed to white when it needs to be. I could live with the zebra look for a while...

Doesn't look like it went 50 miles let alone 500! Drive train is pristine. Nice bike.

I think I see a touch of rust inside of the stem nut. If it was me, I'd send it back.

Beautiful bike!

Nice end of the season snag. Fortunately it was not taken apart by Hurricane Katrina a few years back. Or maybe it just received a good cleaning in the process?

Thank you for that. I hate it when people rub it in. Makes me want to pull out my hair. What's left of it.

To clarify a small date discrency...the head badge 0267 is the frame production date while the 0377 would be the bike assembly date of Feb 6th 1987.

Regardless, its a very nive bike indeed. Enjoy, have fun!!!

Thanks for the clarification . For some strange reason, I thought that the badge was the assembly date

Don't you love those mid-80's color schemes?

I have an '86 Centurion whose paint is typical of the 80's style... it makes me hear the Miami Vice theme music whenever I ride it!

BTW... magenta is being generous. Looks pink to me...

hey... that's what Schwinn called it back then, who am I to argue

Also I suspect that the color/size combination is probably part of the reason that this bike has not been ridden much

Speaking of "Dork Discs" I myself had foolishly tossed those away from my Peugeot bikes in the 80's now, I bet that some of those are actually sought after now. I think I even remember mine had nice embossed clear lettering around it on it that said "Maillard Helicomatic". Haven't seen one of those in a long long time.
I betcha all those discs mus be now hiding under the same sofa somewhere lost socks go!

NO THEY AREN'T.

Nice score on the Schwinn EjustE. On another forum I frequent, that would earn you a heartfelt "You Suck" which is of course meant in the nicest most congratulatory way possible.
