Whatever I can find in my garage. I want to make it as black as possible. So far I've dug up some Ritchey compact cranks, Tektro cantis, CK headset, Ritchey seatpost & Origin8 mustache bars. I'd love to find a Salsa quill stem for it, too bad they're no longer available. I'd also like to find a frame stretcher - its just a little small

I have one!! It's missing the little golld button and quill bolt, but those are trivial things. It's kinda long though, 130 IIRC?,,,,BD

Sorry to bring this back from the dead. I just acquired a nice 84 Stumpjumper frame with the nice biplane fork. I've always wanted an XO-1 but this will have to do. I'll try to post later.

Of course we will need pictures.

I remeber this thread as one of my favorites. I keep thing that my next project will be an XO-1 knock off and had this thread bookmarked.

I've always thought these bikes were really cool. i love the versatility. Is it a mountain bike? A touring bike? Cyclocross???? Yes, why not all three?

I pulled alongside another rider on the way home from work a couple of weeks back, noticing the mustache handlebars as I got near. As I pulled next to him, I noticed "Bridgestone" on the DT, then saw the "XO-1". I complimented him on the bike as I admired it.
I've often thought about building up an XO-1 equivalent, and have enjoyed seeing some of the thoughts being shared in this thread.

Does anyone know how the Specialized Rock Combo stands up to the XOs?

I almost got one on Ebay a few years ago, but the seller canceled the auction after another one went cheap. I think I would still jump on it if one happened to pass my way.

here are the specs for rockcombo
looks like it is more stretched out, longer tt, wheelbase etc.

comparing the xo geometry to those found in a handful of old catalogs, it is pretty unique. I cant find anything really close. it has mtb chain-stay lengths (though slightly shorter than other mtb of the era) with road bike tt length. the closest as far as tt, stay lenght and wheel base I found was a trek 420 from early 84. but it wont have the tire clearance and had more bottom bracket drop.

Alternatives to Bridgestone XO-1: Miyata Triple Cross

I picked up a Miyata Triple Cross off Craigslist and am very please after doing the XO-1 imitation route. I also picked up a Bridgstone XO-5 that still has the arc bars on it. I had intended to switch it to mustache bars as well but it just feels right as it is. Still wish I had the opportunity to ride a real XO-1 or Rivendell Sam to verify how close I am to the 'real' thing. I don't want to spend the big bucks for a Rivendell and then feel it's not better or much better than my Miyata or XO-5.

Nice bike,

I own a 48cm Sam Hillborne with 650b wheels and love it, I really do. It is basically the only bike I ride now. Saying that, I don't think the ride will be much different than the bike you have now. Maybe the sam can take a bit heavier load in the rear for touring but I don't know that for sure. I ride with 38mm tires and fenders but could probably get 42s without fenders on the bike if needed but it looks like your tires are plenty wide.
