7/16" seatpost and seat compatability-

SUPER THIN SEATPOSTS are possibly the lamest thing ever.

Anyway, I have a bike with one of these seatposts, and the saddle on it is both terrible and destroyed-

and to top it off, the part where the saddle sits is thinner still, than even 7/16"!

I kinda want to get a sprung brooks to replace the old saddle, but how would I ever be able to rig a clamp to fit such a small post?

Do they make these clamps? Or is my quest for naught, and as the saddle slowy disappears more and more, I'm eventually going to be riding on a seatpost, with no alternative saddle?

Oh, dear.

If you flip the post over you can use the fat end. I've also had good luck scavenging the clamps from the old saddles and making them fit the new saddles. I don't think I have any in my bin at the moment but someone here MUSt have a dead Schwinn saddle they could steel the clamp out of if you can't reuse yours.

OOoo! I almost forgot. They also make skinny seatposts with fat tops. They show up on Ebay every now and then for $10 or $15.

Awesome. I just need to figure out what QBP is, or recieve a link from some kind fellow. For a 7/16" seatpost with a fat top? Cool.

Link?

I'll post a picture later if no luck seems headed my way. It's really quite ridiculous.

QBP Quality Bike Parts, is the largest wholesale bike supplier in the U.S. You can't buy from unless you have a store front and a have a yellow pages add. With the internet, I'm not so sure about the yellow pages thing anymore. Usually every bike store in existence does business with them. Just stop in to your LBS and ask them if they can order from them. https://www.qbp.com/

The skinny post--- fat top is made by Wald--- and is a little flimsy for a big guy like me, but for welter weight like you, they should be fine!

Also, keep an eye out for Schwinn sized seatpost clamp made by Ideale. They work really well on the traditional skinny bottom, anorexic top seat post.

I looked through QBP, and can't find a 7/16" with a fat top. Lots of 13/16", but not a lot of 7.

Hate to be such a bum, but anyone got a link to one?

Are you sure your seatpost isn't 7/8 inches?

7/16" is 11.1 mm, which seems unlikely.

Oh, BTW, WALD makes a 13/16" seat post with a 7/8" top - model 950. Might be just what you need.

Many older bikes use a 13/16" diameter seat post, with a smaller 5/8" top, I'm pretty sure this is what he is talking about (not sure where 7/16" came from). If you buy the Wald 950 is uses the old 13/16" seatpost diameter, but the top is the more normal 7/8" diameter.

I may as well post that the reason those super thin seat posts exist is that because prior to WWII, American seat posts were solid, not hollow - so they were very skinny. After the war everybody switched to hollow posts, but for some reason decided to keep the old skinny seat clamps... so the tops of the seat posts tapered down to fit them, this may have possibly been to keep seats from slipping down the post - but I don't really know.
