Am I missing something? Since when are mass produced Japanese bikes worth that much. All Campy SR equipped Chicago built Paramounts can't fetch that kind of money.

Well, it is the "World's Only Known Example" and it's in "museum quality condidtion". Let's face it, the known Paramounts number in the hundreds and are there aren't any in known "museum quality condidtion".

Ha, Ha. It sounds like my Sekai 4000 framed bike-except I have a slightly fancier crankset with factory "drilled" chainrings!!
I would be lucky to get $125 for it,and it has the same Champion DB tubes,I think.
Of course mine isn't "museum quality", but it is one of a kind, since I assembled it myself.
Guess you can ask whatever you want, and hope for the best.In this case, best is $3000 for an OK Japanese bike.

There will always be folks who claim their stuff is worth more than yours. I've run into them when I was a Corvette fanatic and when I collected toy trains.
E.g. we've got a dude here in the Carolinas who painted a FB Schwinn Carolina blue. Posted on CL that it's a "one of a kind", and listed it for $300 (might have been higher than that when first listed.) They're all over the place. The best you can do is post on CL that anyone thinking of buying that Shogun should do their homework before making that kind of purchase. OR put another Shogun on CL for only $400, Wow, what a bargain!

This sort of nonsense is a product of the results of a conversation between a friend of a guy who knew a guy who sold a Nearperfectallini Corsa for $5000.00 US. Sadly, these stories are driving the prices of vintage bicycles up as quickly as the supply and demand situation will allow.
That said, I do know a guy who got a bundle for a mid eighties Hardtofindaroni Sport. Supposedly, there were only two hundred made...

I made the mistake of emailing him giving some advice. So far in his responses he compared the bikes value to the Mona Lisa and some other nonsense. I almost feel like pasting the entire email responses, but don't think that would be appropriate. Here are a few snippits of what I wrote and what he responded with:
This was what I sent originally:
I know I am wasting my time, but you are way off in what you think the bike is worth. A quick google search indicates it is a touring model, I would guess early 80's. Tange Champion #2 is typical heavier tubing used on touring models.
If the bike is a full on grand touring design -- eyelets for front and rear fenders and racks, low rider eyelet on the front fork, long rear chain stays -- and the bike is in the condition you describe -- you likely have a $300-perhaps $600 bike. The best regarded off the shelf touring bike from that era is the Miyata 1000 and those in great shape sell for $500-1000. There is no way it is worth even $1000 let alone $3000.
Good luck trying to sell it for what you are asking --
Happy New Year.
Later snippets:
Me:
Here is a link to someone who apparently has one:
https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...ht=shogun+1500
I am not saying you don't have a good bike -- but come on...
Him:
You found ONE reference and the guys a POSER....all spandex bike shorts and NO BIKE....he said the bike was too small for him ????...hahahaha...was he 7 foot tall ??
hahahahah...he then goes on about mountain bikes....hahahah....the other link wasn't valid
its just a link to a main page and their search function BRINGS UP NO SHOGUN 1500
I actually found a guy in Australia who had one and he said it was special order only, cost
$1500.00 AU dollars in 1984 and it was stolen in 1985.

If the seller could find ONE REFERENCE to another bike like his selling for 3K, he would have some precedent for his asking price. Just because something is rare doesn't mean its valuable.

Something’s value is not created by some set standards. It is worth what it is worth to the owner. That is it. I know a lot of people that keep everything they have for sale. I my self have put things up for sale that I didn't want to sell but if someone would give me this dollar amount I would sell it. Never the less I think you all are confusing fair market value with worth. Something is only worth what you can get someone to pay for it. No other dollar amount is correct.

Fair enough, but the guy posting the ad sounds psychotic.

I think regulars here at c&v know well the difference between fair market value and "worth", it has been discussed and topic-ed many times. But when an example like the shogun pops up with its unrealistic asking price it's no surprise to me that it would get the full flame treatment.
Edit: well he pulled his ad, so it must of sold!

Also wonder if those "extras" include about a kilo of controlled substances.

By reading Sonatageek's post, it sounds like the seller is a young, twenty something on crack. Or psychotic with all his "hahahahaha's."

A Shogun 1500 sold on Boston CL back on March 2007 for $50. Don't know if it is the same one though.

I emailed him "Without photographs, that bike doesn't exist."
Maybe we will see this beauty. Or maybe he needs the 3G's to buy a camera.
