My recently acquired Tommasini Sintesi was more than my De Rosa SLX by $10. I have since off loaded the Dura Ace components to a buddies bike. The wheelset just sold for $150 on the local CL so I guess I paid about $225-$250 for the frameset. In the process of a major rebuild.

Most I've ever spent on a c&v bike is $400 on a 78 Raleigh Competition GS, and I've been mad at myself ever since. I plan on selling it come spring and I'd be ecstatic if it brought $300. Other than that 1 fluke, I try not to spend more than $200 on a bike, and that's only if it's my exact size and ready to ride.

What a fabulous machine! Here is my green chromo velato. I paid 850 Euros for the frame back in September.

I've paid £1000 for a 1950 Hetchins frame but my biggest buy was over $2850 for a 1950 Thanet Silverlight.

I spent $250 for my 69 Competition - only becaseu it had chromed lugs. It took like two weeks, but I talked the lady on Craigslist down from $350. I've put well over $500 into it, and continue to upgrade things randomly. The only things left origianl are the seat, handlebars, stem, and headset. Everything else is upgraded from the lowly original components. That's the best thing about the Competitions - you don't feel bad upgrading anything, since except for the frame, it's all low end. Although the stem/bars are 3TTT - I think those might be OK quality, and the seat, of course, is a professional. Funny how the things you are in contact with are all higher quality!

To be honest, though, I am determined to get just the right 50s English frame in 58-60cm someday, and I've decided paying from $500 to $1500 would be ok.

I can't say for sure, but if I remember right, the most I've paid for a collector or flipper bike is $130. It's a Shogun in good condition, and I am having trouble selling it. I hope the problem is the season, not the bike. I have some nicer bikes that I've paid less for.

I think my problem is that I'm paying too little, or really, that I'm buying things that are too low end.

Oh, I should mention another bike, I suppose, but I didn't think of it at first because I built it for myself to ride. Believe it or not, I spent only about $300 to build up a complete Surly Cross Check. My friend sold me the frame and most of the parts super cheap, and I bought a few more parts to make it a complete bike. It's a bit of a frankenbike, because it has insanely light racing wheels on it, because that's what my friend had available. If I ever need heavier wheels, I'll buy or build them, but for now, it's a nice bike at an unbeatable cost.

I have paid more for newer, non-C&V bikes, but I suppose the largest single amount I have ever paid for a older bike was something like $200 for a Klein Pinnacle MTB frameset.

It was obviously well-garaged and in time capsule condition; I'm told that these old chromovelato Olmos are usually quite tattered/rusty.

Geez - looking these over makes me think I'm the only one with regrets around here ...

Mine (and aside from the Lemond - not proud of it...) were:

1988 Bianchi Superleggera - $510
2003 Lemond Poprad - $300
1974 Raleigh Gran Sport ss conversion (w/Bontrager race lite front and ss rear wheels) - $240
1971 Raleigh DL-I - $240

... but the good finds make up for it. All a learning process.

Get in line.

It's just one of those things. I originally bought it to flip, but it was my size and I couldn't part with it. The gearing is horrible and all wrong for me and where I ride, but the beautiful pantographed group makes it unbearable to strip and hang a modern group on.

One day I will either sell it on eBay or go with a modern group, but for right now I'm happy just to possess and admire it.

Just bought my brothers Dave Scott Centurion Ironman for $150................He says he paid about $800 for it in the late 80's and did a few upgrades. It has been hanging in our parents basement for at least 10 years. Paid for but not in my hands as of yet. Should have it early next week.

Previously I had spent $125 on Trek 400 and $130 on some off brand Italian mixte........the name escapes me and I had a hard time flipping it after repairing it.......but I liked it and in the end that's what drives my purchases.

It almost has, twice. But then I always find a reason to keep it in the fold. OFG had a buyer lined up for it about a year ago, but that fell through. I was weak then, and would of sold it at the price suggested in a heartbeat. But that was then and this is now - it is just too pretty to let go of, and most Merckx's I see are Corsas, not Professionals.

Upon reflection - please send pics of the fiancée.

Largest single purchase was $250 for a 1991 Miyata 1000 LT in beautiful condition. I probably have the most money total in my Motobecane Grand Record, but the frameset and wheels were $150 initially. Best score was probably the free Gios Super Record or the $20 Reynolds 531 frame kit that went for $300 on eBay.

The most I have paid for a CV bike was for one of Sheldon's famous bikes. I thought it would go for three times the amount. I ride it every chance I get.

All of my other bikes hover in the $100-$300 range, but they are generally good values. PX-10's Raleigh Competition's, Dawe's Galaxy's, Lemond Team...

Then there are all the 3 speeds for peanuts.

Now if we ever started a thread about how much we have spent to RESTORE our bikes....

Hmmmm,

$80 for the 1972 chrome Paramount
$150 for the lugged, CF Specialized Allez Epic which I gave to my brother
Less than $300 for the Albert Eisentraut Rainbow (with Campy NR) my brother found on CL, but I had to drive 35 miles to go get that

$100.00 - Replaced wheels / tyres, brakes, derailers, and saddle.

$100.00 - Needed nothing but a routine overhaul and an apprpriate saddle.

0.00 - Needed nothing except new (proper) bars and an appropriate saddle.
