OK, fess up. What is the MOST you have paid for a C&V bike?

What I paid for my bikes,
and what I have invested in my bikes,
are two different things.
A car guy that I know that likes to fix up old cars
then race them, once said to me,
"You never add it up. It's to depressing"

Zero. I bought my Ron Cooper new so it wasn't C&V at the time and therefore the new price (about $500 for the frame, assembled with parts from a previous bike) doesn't count.
My Miyata was give to me free.
The Gary Fisher seems like a modern bike to me so I don't count it as C&V, but if you insist then I paid about $300 for it.

$1,200 on the 2000 Bob Jackson (if that can be considered C&V). Otherwise, it was $200 and a trade for the Hetchins.

I recall paying 1100 or 1200 for a C-Record equipped Concorde in mint condition, complete with 28h Sherriff's Star hubbed wheelset.
I later traded it 1:1 for a very rare, and mint Richard Moon custom with full Record 9s Ergo and with Brian Bayliss paint.
Here's the Richard Moon, built down the road from me in Folsom (yes, THAT Folsom) CA:

That's really nice! Another builder I'm going to have to add to the wish list.

First of all, thanks for the compliments!
No, I sure thought it didn't! I spoke to the original owner after he'd had it consigned, then sold to a friend of mine. Turns out the frame is one of twenty that he (Richard Moon) produced before hanging up the torches. I think it is #9 here.
The frame is built with 3 different brands of tubing, including some 753. It's actually on the stiff side for my 145lbs, but descends as well as anything I've ridden. To have found it in my size, oh man, fits me a lot better than the C-Record 57cm Concorde that I traded for this Moon.

Well, there's 20 of them out there, and mine is one of the most-conservative ones. Some feature highly embellished lugwork.
There's a local guy here who knows Richard, and has asked me a few times if I would be willing to sell. Unfortunately, he knows what the consignment price was, and more unfortunately (for him), he actually showed up there by pure chance, literally minutes after my friend had closed the deal by telephone (after calling me). I might not sell it for double that price, or I might, but he wants to pay just 1100.

I have yet to break the $500 barrier on my C&V purchases, but then they were almost all framesets, and not full bikes. The full builds resulting, I do not want to imagine how much they would each total to, market value-wise.

I paid $120 for a Trek 420. Every other bike has been $40 or less. I found a Trek 660 at a garage sale recently, $40.

For this guy:
More for the frame, unpainted, than almost any post so far. But he threw in the pre-shaped fenders.

I have noticed, now faced with limited storage space, that my focus is towards high end and/or very unusual bicycle. Unusual, in this case, meaning "older".
I doubt that I will find a nicer vintage road bicycle, to ride, than I already have. With that in mind, and knowing that I tend to ride the bike I like riding the most, most of the other bicycles, those that are "older", are now, pretty much wall art...
However, I do plan to ride this early seventies Mercier...
...in the upcoming Thunder Bay Mini-Go ride, an annual event that has grown considerably, over the years. The Mercier is not finished, in the picture, but has seen great build progress, in the past couple of days. It should be good to go, by May 30, Mini-Go day. With luck, I will be test riding it tomorrow.

Spent $880 on my chrome p-13/9 a couple years back. Cheap compared to the raleigh pro that I built up from a frame and fork. I'm into that bike for about $1500. The lesson here is that if your building from scratch, it better be a keeper or you will lose your a$$.

You got a good price for the Century. I Picked up a MX Leader and Century last fall. I kept the MX Leader and stripped down the Century and sold it as f/f/hs/bb for more than you paid for yours. Since this thread is about your most expensive bike I had paid less for the MX Leader and Century than the Colnago. Both the MX Leader and Century had DA 7400 components which I like a lot.

I bought a pair of these Belato built 1991 Lemond Team Z bikes NOS. They have 1991 Campy C Record gruppos with Delta brakes and all the bells and whistles. One has never been ridden at all! It's signed by Lemond, The other has a few miles on it. I paid $5k for the pair with provenance records.
Both of them are investment wall hangers that I'll never ride.
Two other wall hangers:
An all original including tires, custom built 1971 Hetchins italia - $1500 and a 1965 Tigra Professional - $1750. I consider these collector's items.

In general, I got great deal on some bikes and frames but some I paid too much for because I wanted them.
I look for clean bikes or frames with NO RUST or dents. Patina is OK but nothing that needs to be repainted.
If a bike is too pretty I end up not ridding it.
Most of my bikes are in the $400 to $800 dollar resale range when I decide to cash out. Hopefully they're part of my retirement fund.... Even if I just break even when I sell one, I will have had the pleasure of working on it and riding it... Can't do that with money or stocks!

This is a good rule. And since I've come close but haven't broken it yet, I may just adopt it. Thanks!

Ok, so not a lot of custom buyers chiming in here and I suspect we know why. I will admit to over 3k for two prime Merz examples and was glad to jump at the opportunity, worth all that and more to me. My size, very good condition, 1 original, 1 updated well, etc. Would do it again in a heartbeat and probably will, just with the next grail (not the right term, but you get the idea) this allows moving on and focusing on other marques. Can I afford it, probably not, that may or may not stop me.

$1200 for a Croce d'Aune equipped DeRosa Professional (cheap!)
Problem is, I bought the $1000 Merckx Corsa Extra at the same time, and I like it better:
The DeRosa is likely going back to the PO, to whom I've offered first refusal now that I've decided I can live without it.

i paid $400 for my '84 davidson.
what a deal, eh?
well, it didn't include a few items: the campy derailleurs, campy shifters, campy hubs, the brooks, new rims, ird freewheel, chain, tires, and other consumables.
who knows what it all cost.?.
i bought a bike last year just for its super record rear derailleur to mount on this davidson. looks so much better now. need to take a pic.
