Nice bicycle and good job on the clean-up. Not a fan of that crankset on that bike, but everything else is spot-on. I have nothing concrete to support it, but I think that's a late 60's frame.

Very nice! I am surprised at how little room that bike has for fenders. What size are the wheels you used?

RIms are 27", the clearances are tight, but they work, I have wondered whether perhaps it was specced as 700c.

I think the crankset is a bit of a compromise, but I'll see if I can live with it as alternatives that might look more period might also be a fair bit more expensive and hard to find, or a fair bit heavier. I don't mind it too much as is, but I do recognise that it's a bit off. An unpainted chainring might make it less obtrusive. I'll be keeping an eye on ebay. Perhaps they might change, perhaps not...

As for other possible changes - there are small adjustments, but the main thing I'm considering is an alloy rim on the front in place of the heavy and quite corroded steel rim, although I'll keep it 27", but I'm a bit out of cash for now, so it'll wait. The stainless steel mudguards (fenders) are a bit messy, I had them hanging around so I used them, but something lighter and cleaner might come along, as it is I quite like the way that their battered appearance makes the bike look like it's been together forever. But as the bike is new to me and it works fine for now I'll let it settle in and take my time and see...

I would like to know more about the shifter cable routing. I see the cable housing runs down the seat stay, what do you use for a stop? I like the way you have it looks.

The stop is a standard Sturmey Archer chainstay fulcrum clip:

They do fulcrum clips in a useful range of sizes, the larger ones have a white nylon stop, I used one without the stop at the top of the seatstay as a cable guide.

The only unusual bit of the routing is the duel cable toptube clips which were NOS from ebay.

I just got an f.w. evans bike and I'm trying to figure out more about it. I've asked around and this seems to be one of the only places people have even heard of F.W. Evans. I mainly bought my F.W. Evans for the components that were on it but I don't think they were original...

The frame is a F.W. Evans lightweight reynolds 531 tubing has a bunch of Campagnolo components on it. I'm going to clean it up a bit an get some pictures to post soon.

have you found any good sources of info for F.W. Evans as far as dating the frame?

With the information on that site and a few photos to be found around the web there's a fair bit that you can probably surmise about the date of your bike, but like many companies Evans lost their older records years ago.

I exchanged a couple of emails with Nic Henderson of that site who is probably as knowledgable as anyone and who seems like a very nice friendly enthusiast.

I am revisiting this thread with the hope to gather some info on my bike.

The frame & forks are built with 531 Reylonds tubing. There is a sticker on the seat tube that reads "Handbuilt and Brazed in England for FW Evans by ORBIT". The bike is built with a 21speed RSX groupset (Deore LX rear mech) that as far as I know it was intoduced in 1997. Cantilever brakes, Brooks saddle, Mavic rims.

The bike was given to me by an old guy when I used to work in a bikeshop in London. I have been using it the last 3 years and the only thing needed so far was some lube in the sticky left hand shifter. Everything else works fine.

Any additional info from you would be much appreciated
