PDF of Sutherland's 4th (no charge for BF members)

See Post #7 below for download information. If you can't download it there (limited number allowed), then See Post #20 for another location.

I got a mint copy of Sutherland's 4th edition, published in 1985, as a gift this holiday season. I scanned the whole thing to PDF, and did OCR so that it's text-searchable. I also bookmarked all the chapters for greater ease of navigation. Scanned at 300 dpi, it turned out to be about 130 Mb total. Doing OCR also conveniently rotated the landscape table pages so that reading them isn't an exercise in neck-cranking.

If anyone would like a copy on a CD, drop me a PM with your real name and postal address. I'll wait a week or so, and then make copies.

Edit: several of youse have PMed me asking what you can contribute to defray cost. Well, if you all want to send me a 1970s Jack Taylor touring frame with 62-63 cm seat tube C/T, that would be great (!); failing that, it's just paying it backward for all the benefits I get from reading C&V -- no charge.

Sutherland's 4th is somewhat “slimmer” than the 6th edition that's available at icelord.net, but it has a lot of C&V lore in it, and a very extensive section on various coaster brake/internal gear hubs that were current at the time, too. I can probably shrink the file size somewhat by optimizing within Acrobat, but when I tried to do it to the whole package, it crashed -- so I'll have to do that chapter by chapter, and I've got other more important projects in the short term. I might also create a version omitting the brake/geared hub parts, for those who couldn't care less about those; but again, that's for the future.

Edit again: PS -- In case you're mystified about where the Barnett's in the thread title went -- I was thinking about making a similar offer for Barnett's v1-3 (no appendix), which I've assembled from a couple sources. However, publication date for that is much more recent (2000), only 10 years, not 25, like Sutherland's 4th. Sorry for the tease.

Generous offer. If I ever run across a Jack Taylor, it's yours.

Update: I should be sending out the CDs Tuesday. I got it all done, but then realized today that all the bookmarks were set to give ”fit width“ page view. And I'm having a bit of trouble with Acrobat on my home computer. I'll fix it at work, where I originally made them.

As an alternative to using a CD, why not email it via transferbigfiles.com? I learned of this site through a contact of BF member Citoyen du Monde. You upload your file (up to 1 GB) and they send the recipient an email with a link in it that kicks off the download. It's useful if a file you want to send is too big to be an email attachment. I sometimes send catalogs to people that way.

Thanks! Great idea; I should have thought of it because someone at work sent me a huge file that way recently.

Here's the ReadMe:

I’ve scanned Sutherland’s 4th edition (1985) at 300dpi resolution, and then processed it with Acrobat’s OCR (optical character recognition) feature, to allow keyword searches. In addition, I’ve bookmarked all the chapters, for ease of browsing.

The total manual came out to 131 Mb, which is fine for me, but others may be more frugal with disk space; so I also did a reduced version that’s only 26 Mb, but it does a funny blur/sharpen sequence when displaying, which takes more time. Also, the image quality is just not as sharp. Both versions are available; see bottom of post.

If anyone prefers to have the individual chapters, should you want to fool with it yourself, or prefer to read it that way, then I can provide those on CD; just drop me a line.

To access the bookmarks, click on a blue page icon on the left. Bookmarks are all set to change the page view to “fit page” when you navigate using them. To me this makes sense. If it doesn’t to you, you might be able to adjust that using Acrobat (at least the full version will, maybe not the Reader).

The files are here (right clicking might help, then save to disk):

131 Mb version

26 Mb version

No problem. One caveat, though: Transferbigfiles.com won't keep the files on their server indefinitely. So the links you posted above will at some point go stale.

Thanks very much Charles! You've done a wonderful thing. I'll download the big version from work tomorrow.

You've earned some karmic merit. Anything you need?

ACK. They only allow 20 downloads. I'll repost the large one (takes an hour on my laptop). If the smaller one runs out of gas, someone post here.

Eventually, Jon is going to have the large file on VeloBase, but until then, I am hosting it via FTP. I will host if for about a week, possibly longer if needed.

Thanks so much, Lynn. I'm updating the links to the large file so that it will be good for another 20 downloads, too.

Thanks for the pdf. I don't even have to feel bad because I own the hard copy. Mine would not make such nice scans though, it's a tad dirty with plenty of greasy mechanic finger prints!
