Shifter swap on 1989 Cannondale M2000: Suntour Mountain for Deore XT?
I recently bought a 1989 Cannondale M2000 mountain bike for use as a commuter. I was adjusting the brakes and derailleur cables on the bike today and discovered that the threaded portion of both Deore XT shifters with the barrel nut adjuster is broken. It is broken right where it enters the shifter body. The barrel nut and the threaded part spins with it so it will not tighten the cable. The threaded part is plastic and 21 years old so I guess it is understandable.
I have a set of Suntour Mountain shifters on my old KHS Montana Pro (even older than the Cannondale) that I would like to use as a replacement for the Deore XT shifters. The Suntours are all metal and have operated flawlessly for the past 15+ years on my old bike. Is it possible to replace the Deore shifters with the Suntour shifters without a lot of hassle? They are both 21 speeds, by the way.
Thanks very much.

El Lobo, the threaded barrel is spring loaded and probably is metal versus plastic.. If you try to simply thread it in its NOT going to work, you kinda sorta have to retract the plastic piece back and then thread it in. in reality it doesnt matter if its stripped or not becasue the RD has its own adjuster. The lever adjusters are for 'on the fly' adjusting.
