Can anyone tell me anything about this Campagnolo Headset?

Hi,
I bought a Campagnolo Headset recently for a build I'm putting together and I was hoping someone might be able to tell me more about it? Particularly dating it and how good quality it is. Also whether the upper frame cone is original? as it isn't marked whereas the lower is, see pictures.

Pictures are here:

Know already:
Italian thread ie 55°, 24tpi
stack height is 34.6mm not including narrower 2mm lip of locknut
30.2mm cup ODs
26.4mm CR ID

Thanks a lot, any knowledge would be appreciated

george

the Pista uses 5/32" ball bearings, the Road uses 3/16". Too bad that race is thoroughly pitted, it's toast IMHO.
check out Velobase.com for more info

Thanks a lot,
it came with 5/32 bearings so that'd suggest track. However I don't know if 3/16 definitely wouldn't work, is there a way of telling?

If it is a Nuovo Record track headset does that help date it at all?

Cheers

I don't know but it does help jack up its value.

3/16" balls will not work. You have a couple options to replace the race. The Campy "Sport" headset is virtually identical to the Pista except for the threaded cup. The crown race will interchange. There are a couple "Sport" headsets on eBay right now, but that likely to be an expensive fix.

The other way is to use the crown race from an old Tange "Levin" headset. The Levin has come in several variations over the years; you want the one that uses 5/32" balls from the mid 70s to mid 80s. These often go for less than US$20, sometime even free if you can find an appropriate donor bike.

BTW, the NR "Pista" headset was produced from the early 1960s to the late 1980s.
