Unexpected find of a perfect '81 Trek 613!! And need help getting other bike to sell

Hello!

I just bought a 50cm 1981 Trek 613 so that my Dad can ride it when he visits this weekend on his birthday. For $120, I was super surprised to find it basically brand new (picture to come later today!)

I am so stoked!!! My Dad can't bring the bike home, and I was going to sell it on CL after he's gone, but now I decided that I have to keep it. I normally ride a 42cm Surly and a 46cm Lotus, but somehow I can ride this bike just fine.

Anyway, I can't keep 3 bikes at home, so I need to sell my early 80's Lotus when my Dad leaves. I have some questions--

1. If I bought it from LBS in October for $200, does the free tune-up transfer with the bike sale?
2. I know that LBS used bikes are often a bit more expensive than CL flippers. If i were to sell on craigslist for $120, is that a good price?

3. Is it okay if i have a paint chip on the fork? Or should I repair it? How would I fix the paint chip?

4. Should I have it tuned up first? It's ride-able and rides well as it is, but maybe a little dirty.

Thank you!!

1. It usually doesn't but it would be worth asking the LBS

2. Really depends on the market in your area. Give it a shot.

3. Depends on how bad the chip is but I'd probably just leave it for the new owner to decide.

4. I'd give it a basic cleaning but you won't get the extra $$$ out of a tune up when you sell it (plus people like me would rather do it themselves anyway).

1&4. Take it back and have the LBS go ahead and tune in up (your free one)/ clean it up. I doubt it will transfer, but that would be up to the store policy. You need to check with them.

2. If you paid $200, then $120 is probably fair, but it's difficult to answer w/o pics & specs. Might even be too low for a difficult to find frame size.

3. Is it rusty? Don't let rust form. Once again some chips are worse than others. (no pic to tell) You can probably match the paint with nail polish.

Since the bike came with a free tune up, I would have it tuned up.

Do a search on touchup paint, its been covered very well in the past. Yes, I would touch it up.

Price depends on model. Lotus had some fantastic high end bikes, some so so bikes, and some low end bikes.

+1 on those and:

- keep the sales receipt and mention that you have a sales receipt for the amount you paid and that you are willing to surrender it to the next owner, plus mention the fact that the bike has been recently tuned up in your sales ad

It's really not possible to give you any sort of estimate of value without knowing the model and your location. Don't assume the shop charges a premium, unless you know that from watching the local market. I'm guessing you don't really do that or you wouldn't need to ask us. The shop near me is more likely to sell low, just to be rid of the bike. For example, I bought a Miyata 710 from them recently for 150 that I could definitely sell at a profit on CL. Bottom line - post some pictures and tell us where you are.
