Peugeot Carbolite 103 racing bike stem bolt

Hi,

I've got an old 1985 Peugeot PH11 racing bike - I need a new stem bolt and nut as the other became seized and snapped in two. Does anyone know anywhere in the UK (London ideally) where I could get one or the size (I don't have it anymore)?

Can I replace the stem with something more modern?

Thanks very much.

Most good bike shops should be able to dig up a replacement stem bolt and wedge to work with your stem, but try the older shops first as the staff in most newer shops might have never even seen a quill type stem in their lives.
Otherwise, you can always hunt for a complete replacement stem from eBay. Just find out fist what you have (Could still be a French spec stem that is of smaller diameter.). Make sure you bring your stem with you to the bikeshop so they can get a caliper on it to measure it.

I've tried the 3 bicycle shops near to me (Evans Cycles, Halfords and Actionbikes) but none could help but one referred me to somewhere else and I'm trying that place on Saturday, but failing that I'll probably replace the whole stem, once I know what I have :/ as I am assuming that if it is French spec, then I can't just replace it with another ebay stem?

Cheers.

I`d expect your french stem to be slightly slimmer than the 1" ones. You can carefully sand it down, I do that al the time.

IIRC, I bought my French diameter 110mm Cinelli 1A stem back in the 80s because even then I had a feeling that French spec stuff was starting to fade away and I really wanted a longer stem on my PSV. I tried to find another one at ebay just for kicks last year, and there was none to be found even after a few months of looking. I think there are still some out there, but they are dissapearing real fast as the years go by. Just can't figure out why the French bother to make components just a milimeter or two different from the rest....just to be different???

The man in this thread is selling a french stem in case you are interested. Don't know if it is what you want.

You can always find French stems on eBay.

Only one of my three French bikes has a French stem. Sandpaper is cheap.
