what happened to 80's italian bikes???

A year ago i was super broke and only looked on ebay for bikes for fun. this year i have a little bit of money to spend on a new to me bike. last year i saw pinarello, De Rosa, tommaso even nice Bianchi with columbus frames and nice campy groups for $700 or less. Now you get get any of that for under $1200. why has the price for nice clean columbus framed 80's bikes gone up 20% or more in the last year??

Instead of transportation the probably have entered what the Franklin Mint would call "Collectables". I don't think any are being used as wall art or put under glass yet, but the day may come.

Interesting comment. I had a mint Merckx listed here and then on Ebay. No takers. I ended up selling it locally for $750.

I don't think this phenomenon is limited to Italian bikes -
People are waking up to the fact that a lot of these C&V bikes have real cache and they're not making anymore of them.

I actually find way too many!

Yes, I own quite a few Italian bikes, although only three are from the eighties.

I'd be happy to share for the right price.

I gave this question quite a bit of thought some time ago, and this is what I came up with...

https://www.mytenspeeds.com/My_TenSpe...ility_Page.htm

I might add that this is mostly my opinion, flavored with just a touch of fact.

80's Italian bikes aren't worth so much anymore because people can buy a brand new entry level road bike with way better components for 1,000 or 750$ used.

My perception is that the market has depressed, at least for what I have. I want to sell my Masi (California) but I see the ones on Ebay not selling. So mine is pulled off the market. I wouldn't call it hoarding, I just don't think its the right time to try to sell.

There's a 56cm Faggin that's been on NY CL for at least 8 months. He just lowered to $500. Give 'm a buzz!

A Pinarello on CL in Raleigh was for sale for $700, and went for far less. Less than a month ago.

The main factor is the price of new bikes, and people being unwilling to pay that much to enter a sport.
They turn to lower-priced bikes, and face it, C&V steel road bikes are just that, and create demand, which raises the prices.

Even at $1000, a nice Pinarello is a bargain, in my opinion, compared to an entry-level Al/CF mix at $1500.

Then, there's the people on this forum, who create the buzz, the market, and drive the price up a bit.
What's different about is that we find the deals, aren't just buyers/sellers, and like this stuff.

On top of that, we are all good looking, highly intelligent, trustworthy, brave, and loyal.

+1 I am seeing them as well. Any of the higher end bikes tend to languish on C/L around here. Buyers are either looking for a basic bike, or something to ride in a triathlon. Neither of those groups are attracted to higher end vintage stuff.

The cheap stuff sells fast. The higher priced better stuff does not. My two higher dollar buys this year were on Craigs List for ten days to two weeks. Both had attractive prices.

BTW, the bikes you describe are a lot of bike for $700.

I beg to differ with the last statement

You see more and more vintage bikes on triathlons. Of course the majority is foil and plastic bikes, but there is a good 15-20% vintage steel crowd, depending on the race.

As I mentioned earlier, it was difficult to get $750 for my mint Merckx. I listed a Quintana Roo tri bike on CL and it sold immediately.

I have kind of wanted one over the last couple of years, but I seem to be cursed. I had a Benotto 3000 for a while, but too small unfortunately. I am still finding
very nice Japanese tubing bikes lately, with Italian and/or Shimano components. Maybe someday...,,,,BD

I do see some of that, as about half of my vintage sales last year went to people wanting to do a triathlon. It helped when the cheapest bike at the nearby tri shop sells for $1200. I recently sold a late 80s Sirrus and a 1986 Prelude to triathletes.

I really wanted this bike. I didn't miss by much, as I sold plenty of bikes and stuff last Sunday to meet this price. Not meant to be I guess.
