1972 raleigh sport

I picked this up on craigslist Sunday afternoon. Honestly i think i paid way to much for it, but i have been wanting a older raleigh for awhile now, i love my 1988 raleigh sport but i have been wanting a older one.
i think this one qualifies as a older one considering all the rust. and broken parts. the paint is in really bad shape when i rub the frame the black is coming off on my hands.

what i really wanted to do was repaint the frame and fenders, and chain guard, i really am looking at painting it a cream color drawing inspiration from https://velospace.org/node/1648 i saw this bike in the 3 speed appreciation thread. I really am not to worried about keeping it period correct, so im probably going to lose the pedals, grips, seat, and maybe the rims, but keeping the hub.

i want to keep the cottered cranks and chainring handle bars and stem and seat post and brake arms. It also came with a raleigh headlight, so i want to keep that too...

Cool bike. For the paint, I'd recommend a good scrubbing with dish detergent. See how much of that paint actually comes off. I'd honestly leave it as-is. If the rims or spokes are really rusty, swap them out, but aside from that and perhaps the saddle, I'd leave it be.

+1

Oil/replace the chain, replace the tires, maybe the brake pads.

I don't see a shift cable--is it there?
Is that a Raleigh headlight? They usually mount on the Heron bracket.

If you want to replace the rims, aebike has 32, 36, and 40 spoke Sun CR-18s in the 590 size available, which are a direct replacement for the Raleigh Patent rims.

Oh, and if you do repaint it, I'd paint it either black, Raleigh green or Rudge red - make sure you have the white on the rear fender, and make sure you can get a new set of decals before stripping these. Also, if you do repaint it, might as well go with a cream head tube. I love that look...

Were it mine and I was going to have it repainted, I'd go with Rudge red and a cream head tube, and rechrome everything, including the rims.

Paint is in good enough shape that it only needs a polish - with exception to the fenders. Replacement fenders in a condition matching a polished frame can be had on eBay.

Clean & then maybe use an automotive compound, then wax, wax, wax . You will be surprised how well it will clean up.

thanx everyone for the help. I'm probably going to take it all apart, re-grease ad relube everything, clean and wax the frame. and give the chrome parts a oxalic bath...
yes the shifter and cable are both broken, and i thought the headlight was a cool feature it is a raleigh headlight. i took it off before i took pictures. so maybe i can get it working again.

thanx for all the input.

cant wait to get started on it...
